"Big Move" Happening At Emerald Isle

The beach town of Emerald Isle is getting ready for a big move. A dangerous part of their real estate is being moved to a new location. Right now, Bogue Inlet is hugging the Western end of Emerald Isle in Carteret County.

The inlet's currents have been eroding a neighborhood called the Point, threatening homes. It's also dangerous for boaters trying to use that coastal inlet. But Wednesday, the town sent out bid proposals for a $5 million effort to dredge a new channel here, moving it West more than half a mile.

The channel move will be paid for by bonds that voters approved in 2002. It's a $17 million effort that will also replace sand along most of the town's oceanfront when that project is completed next Spring.
