Coast Guard Rescues Pilot After FA-18 Crashes Off Virginia Coast

A pilot is OK after Navy F/A-18 Hornet crashed off the coast of Virginia Thursday afternoon during a routine training operation. A Helocopter crew from US Coast Guard Air Station in Elizabeth City rescued the pilot.

The pilot successfully ejected and was recovered a short time later by a Coast Guard helicopter. He was taken to a local hospital for evaluation of his injuries which are not believed to be serious. The pilot's name has not been released.

The aircraft was assigned to the "Golden Warriors" of Strike Fighter Squadron 87 based at Naval Air Station Oceana. The crash happened shortly after 4 p.m. about 70 miles off the Virginia coast.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
