Free Dredge Closes Bridge Forcing Delay

Some would-be vacationers or people trying to get back home from the Outer Banks had a major headache and road delay to deal with.

According to officials with the Dare County Emergency Management Office, a dredge broke loose around 11 a.m. Sunday afternoon, and drifted towards the Herbert C. Bonner Bridge, forcing emergency officials to close the bridge that spans Oregon Inlet. The Bonner Bridge is the only way on or off of Hatteras Island, forcing major delays for those trying to start their vacation there, or those trying to leave the area and head home. Officials say they have secured the dredge, but are still waiting for the tide to change to further secure it. Officials were hoping to have traffic flowing again by six o'clock Sunday evening.
