A Rowan County man who twice has been convicted of driving while impaired is accused by the state Highway Patrol of causing a fatal wreck by going the wrong way on Interstate 85.
John Benjamin Turner is charged with second-degree murder, driving while impaired and aggravated serious injury by vehicle. He's being held in the Rowan County Detention Center with bond set at 1 million dollars.
The patrol says Turner's blood alcohol level was 0.19, more than twice the legal limit in North Carolina.
Heath Maynard Kelly of Charlotte was killed, and his 4-year-old niece was injured and is in critical condition at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.
The patrol says Kelly was driving south on I-85 in Kannapolis near the Rowan-Cabarrus county line on Thursday when Turner entered the highway from Lane Street, driving his truck north in the southbound lane. Kelly swerved to avoid hitting the truck, but his Blazer rolled over and hit the median.
