Police say one person was killed and two critically injured when a pickup truck fell from the U.S. 15-501 South overpass in Durham.
Authorities think the driver lost control on the ramp Saturday evening, flipped over and crashed to the ground.
Hours later, tow truck operators were trying to pull the all-but-unrecognizable Ford F-150 off a pile of rocks lining a drainage ditch. It appeared the truck had landed on its roof about 40 feet below the overpass.
Police are trying to determine why the vehicle went airborne at the apex of the ramp just after exiting the interstate. The ramp is on the busy Durham-Chapel Hill corridor and was closed for hours.
