School District Considers Screening Volunteers

One county in Eastern Carolina may soon require criminal background checks for volunteers.

The Craven County School Board will consider the motion on Thursday night. Officials say currently the school system has nothing in place to check if volunteers have a criminal past. School officials say with 22 schools in the county, there are nearly 1,700 volunteers per year. And even though officials say they are unaware of any problems in the past, they say a background check can hopefully help to keep it that way.

School officials say if the motion passes, the details of the screening and who will pay for it still have to be worked out.
