A Winston-Salem-based developer says he wants to buy North Wilkesboro Speedway, the former NASCAR stop which has been sitting idle for 11 years.
Worth Mitchell, whose father is president of the Piedmont Federal Savings & Loan Association, says he has more than enough investors to purchase the track. It was listed for sale last year for an asking price of $12 million.
Mitchell says he's trying to see whether there's enough community support for attractions, including racing series and concerts. He says it's in the hands of the people of Wilkes County.
Bruton Smith and Bob Bahre had each bought a half interest in the track to get the coveted NASCAR dates that went with it. Smith moved a race to his Texas track, and Bahre took his to New Hampshire International Speedway. They couldn't work together, and North Wilkesboro Speedway closed.
