A poll released today shows about half of those questioned approve how Senator Elizabeth Dole is doing her job.
The Elon poll comes about a year before Dole seeks re-election.
The poll also shows New York Senator Hillary Clinton has a sizable lead over former North Carolina Senator John Edwards for the Democratic presidential nomination. former Tennessee Senator Fred Thompson is apparently ahead of former New York Mayor Rudy
Giuliani among Republicans.
The survey of 664 North Carolina residents taken this week shows 50 percent approve or strongly approve of Dole's job as senator. One-fourth disapproved. The rest didn't know or didn't respond.
The poll suggests her views on the Iraq war could play a big
role if she is challenged.
The poll has a sampling error of 3.9 percentage points.
