Martin County Animal Control is setting up emergency rabies clinics this weekend so pet owners can get their animals vaccinated.
Officials say they have confirmed two positive rabies cases in the last few days. One was a bobcat that attacked three pit bulls at a home in the Hamilton area. That bobcat was shot and killed by a neighbor. Then a raccoon killed by two dogs in the Williamston area also just tested positive for rabies. Because none of the dogs were vaccinated all five of them had to be euthanized, which animal control says could have been avoided.
State officials have confirmed this is the second time in 2009 a bobcat has tested positive for rabies in North Carolina.
This weekend animal control is making sure residents have the opportunity to get their pets the right kind of shots. A one year vaccine will cost $5 and a three year vaccine will cost $7.
