People who smoke marijuana for medical purposes in North Carolina told House members it relieves their chronic pain, but a bill legalizing its use isn't likely to pass.

The proposal considered Thursday by the House Health Committee would exempt from prosecution patients who possess a small amount
of marijuana or grow it for themselves.

Janet Osburn of Clayton is a nurse who testified smoking marijuana eased her constant pain from spine and muscular disease.

But the Rev. Mark Creech of the Christian Action League of North Carolina said legalizing marijuana would create unintended consequences and other prescription drugs can bring the same
effects.

No vote was taken. Committee co-chairman Rep. Bob England said he didn't expect one this late in the session.

smoking marijuana helps my medical symptons 100% better than my current medicine and also a lot cheaper, with min.side effects.pass the bill so people like me don't have to break the law to combat chronic illnesses.my man made prescriptions are by far more harmful and cost more to taxpayers.

The way I look it is, people die everyday from the use of alcohol and ciggs. No one has ever died from the use of marijuana. IT really helps people that need it. it should be legal for the people who really need it to ease there pain. The only reason they will not legal lize it is becasue the goverment can not control it.Really its all about the goverment not making money off it.

Michael, you are a smart man, excellent post. In a country where alcohol is legal, advertised on television, and profitted on by the government, it seems painfully and blatently hypocritical for a much less harmful drug (marijuana) to be illegal.
