A new study shows about one in four teenaged girls are getting the very controversial vaccine against cervical cancer.

The Centers for Disease Control says about 25 percent of teen girls have gotten the Gardisil vaccine. It's a three-shot series that targets the sexually transmitted Human Papillomavirus, or HPV.

Health officials have recommended girls get the shot when they are 11 or 12, before they become sexually active.

Just seems from what I've read that this drug was fast tracked into the public. No this is not the 60's but the FDA, under pressure, will fast track a drug into the public under certain circumstances. Just ask Merk or Phizer.

Brad we're not living in the 60s. Our FDA is very rigorous in testing new drugs prior to market compared to other nations. I halfway agree with your sentiment about overly medicating our kids, but this is not ritalin or adderall, it's a vaccine. Are you against the measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine as well? How about Tetanus?

Too many drugs!!! Have you ever wondered why the US has such a high rate of D. Syndrome children? How about the fact that the US is the ONLY country in the world where many kids are born alergic to PEANUTS? Scientific facts. We have the best healthcare in the world but yet we rely too much on supposidly helpful drugs. So many antibiotics are being pumped into us that our immune systems cannot naturally form a defense against new and old viruses. Does anyone remember the great drug for pregnant mothers in the 60s? I can't recall the name but I can recall that it was taken off the market because babies were being born with terrible deformities. If this vaccine later becomes linked to some serious side affect or illness, keep your tears to yourself. Yes you feel you are doing the right thing, but are you?

It shouldn't be controversial. But yet some people are still upset that it's a STD vaccine. An STD vaccine is for SEX, and SEX is a horrible horrible thing that these parents don't ever want to consider their child doing in their lifetime. Yeah it really is silly. If this vaccine prevents the spread of cervical cancer then it's nothing but a good thing.

along with miss D, why is it so controversial?

My daughter was able to get the series of shots her senior year of high school. I am greatful that we were able to have the hep b shot in middle school, the menengitis vaccine and this. It gives me a peace of mind for a healthier future, especially since cancer runs in my family. Please moms, let your daughters get the vaccine, don't hesitate.
