The Food and Drug Administration has rejected a ban on cold and cough medicines for young children.
FDA Officials say they need to gather more information on whether the over-the-counter drugs are safe and effective for children ages two to six. Officials say they're also worried that a ban might force parents to give adult medications to their children.
Pediatrician groups are backing the ban, saying the cold medications send thousands of children to the emergency room every year. The FDA has warned against giving the over-the-counter drugs to children under the age of two.
