Hundreds of sixth graders across North Carolina have been suspended for not having their vaccinations updated.

A new state law requires every sixth-grader to receive one booster dose of tetanus-diphtheria-pertussis, or Tdap.

The News & Record of Greensboro reported Friday that 1,150 Guilford County students face suspension if they don't show updated shots. The Fayetteville Observer said 103 Cumberland County sixth-graders had been suspended since Wednesday for not having their shot.

The gas shortage in western North Carolina prompted Buncombe
County Schools to postpone this week's deadline for shots.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommended the booster after North Carolina saw an increase in whooping cough.

Anonymous....you are right....parents do have the right to refuse medical care for thier children, including vaccines. They, however, are the first to kick up a fuss and threaten to sue if their child is then struck by one of the diseases that the vaccines are in place to prevent.

This is stupid. Having unvax'd children in class with vaxed children is going to do no harm. Parents if you do not wish to have your child vax'd seek exemption. Yes you do have the right to not have your child vax'd.

Shots are not always free. My son who is in sixth grade has health insurance, and I simply do not have the money to pay the co-pay for the office visit! Does that make me a bad mother? Hell no! I work, and do the best I can for my child. Back when I was in school, a doctor came to the school and gave the kids the shots. Whatever happened to that?

Why doesn't the school board set up vaccinations in the schools. There is no cost to the parents so line the students up in the auditorium and have the public health nurses come in and do the vaccinations.

Ya know, there are hundreds of Urgent Cares here in Fayetteville, so for a parent to not take their kid for their shots is just on laziness. I think these kids should be suspended. Some Parents don't take things seriously enough unless it effects them. Having their kids home will make them get off their butts and get their shots done. Shoot, SHOTS ARE FREE!!! I took my 2 children for their shots ready to pay and they cost ZERO! so now what is these peoples excuse? I support the schools and if suspending these children is the only way to get things done then so be it!

Ya know. Good! If I have to get off my butt to get my 2 children their shots then so can other parents. If I am working in the day then I take them to an urgent care at night for these shots. I think the only way to ensure things will get done correctly is by doing something like this.Suspension.
