Carteret County is receiving a grant to fight obesity. It will share $150,000 with eight other county agencies as the state works to improve the health of its residents.

North Carolina recently ranked 16th in the nation in adult obesity, according to the NC Department of Health and Human Services. The state ranks 5th for overweight adolescents.

The grants are part of the Eat Smart, Move More initiative.

tammie, Take your son to a doctor to ensure there is not a correctable medical problem contributing to his weight gain. Either way, he may need a special diet. The doctor can point you in the right direction. Prior to the visit write down all of your concerns to ensure you get the most bang for your buck. Don't sit around waiting for some one to bring help to your door. Take charge of your sons health. Fast foods, chips, cookies put the pounds on. Your slimmer son may have a faster metabolism that enables him to burn off the excess calories better. It is best to avoid fast foods, junk & processed foods. You obviously have access to the computer. There are many websites that would provide much information on this topic. Good luck!

What's another $150,000? The doctors need to tell people "your digging your grave with your teeth"! Diet, exercise, and your hands work. Your hands for pushing yourself away from the table. Use a salad saucer for your meal(small portions) instead of a trough.

Been there; There is a plethora of information out there for people that 'have no idea how'. It isn't up to the general population to pay for programs for fat people to lose weight. While there are a select few that actually have a genetic disorder that can't be helped, this is a minute portion of our over weight population. It goes to one thing and one thing only...PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY. I gain and lose weight all the time. It is my fault when I gain it back and NO ONE ELSE'S. It is not part of the government's job to take care of you from the cradle to the grave. If you need to 'know how' then use the internet, go to the library and read a book. Do it yourself! The information and choices are out there and it won't cost you a dime to go and get it.

Then those people can visit the local library and check out a book on the topic.

Ya know, its up to the person themself to lose weight, if they choose to keep chugging those whoppers then to get off their butts and exercise then thats their problem. Common sense says if you wanna lose weight then lay off the junk food, and walk or exercise more. alot of people who says oh i need to lose weight, then says billy pass me another burger and i'll start my diet tomorrow. sorry anyone in the military will tell ya, staying healthy and fit can be done easily but you gotta get off your butt and move. problem is people choose to be just too dang lazy.

Barbara while you are right that it starts with each of us....maitaining a program and changing one's lifestyle has better results when done with another. There are also many out there who wish to make changes but have no idea how to.

What a load of crap. Just tell them to STOP EATING. Who is going to pocket that $150,000.00? Some politician, probably. This is pork, defined. Yeah, tell them to lay off of the pork.

I agree that obesity is a big problem everywhere. But this problem is only something that each individual can only conquer themselves. Buffet? Fast Food? Laziness. Get real. I also am 40 pound overweight, and it is up to me to loose this excess weight. There is too much convenience in eating out. We need to exercise, eat at home and save money as well. There is support everywhere, but it has to start at home. It doesn't take 150,00 dollars to tell someone how to loose weight. It only takes common sense.
