Just a few glasses of wine during the first few weeks of fetal development could put a baby at risk for fetal alcohol syndrome.

A researcher from the Medical College of Georgia has begun a study using lab mice to determine how much alcohol it takes, and at what point in a baby's development, causes this potentially harmful condition.
He believes consuming several drinks in a short time, often before women know they are pregnant, can increase cell death.

Then there are too few cells to properly form the child's face, and possibly the brain and spinal cord.
