Friday morning, red flags were flying at Atlantic Beach off the circle as lifeguards warned beachgoers not to go in the water because of dangerous rip currents.
The National Weather Service is warning of the high risk through Saturday, at the coastlines of Carteret, Onslow, Dare and Hyde counties.
Forecasters say the combination of high astronomical tides, moderate easterly flow and southeasterly swell will produce a high threat of dangerous rip currents Friday. They say the threat will likely persist through Sunday.
Experts strongly urge you to pay attention to any available lifeguards and monitor the flag warnings on the beach.
Rip currents are strong, narrow channels of water that flow out to sea. If you become caught in a rip current, remain calm and try to swim on a course that is parallel to the beach until you get free, then swim to shore.
Do not try to swim against the current. They can exhaust and kill even the strongest swimmer.

I want to warn people like me who have been boogy boarding for years that it only takes one wave to catch you off guard and you could be paralyzed. I was very lucky, I only suffered a cracked nose, busted up face and a really sore back and neck. The wave got me because I was directing my boyfriend to help a woman and her son who were being pulled out in the current (he was closer to them) and I turned to a wave coming over my head, I tried to ride it but caught it too low and it slammed me face first straight down on the bottom and flipped my legs over my back (bending my neck back)and then tumbled me. I thought I was going to die, when I came up I thought my neck had to be broken as hard as I hit and as bad as it hurt.Luckily,I was wrong. I want to thank the Coquino lifeguards, paramedics, and the nurses and doctors at the Outer Banks hospital for taking good care of me and making sure I hadn't broken my neck.Next time the waves are that rough, I will get out.It is not worth it.
