A warning this morning to women suffering from diabetes who may get pregnant: Your children are many times more likely to have birth defects.
That's according to a new study from the CDC, and it's detailed in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
They found women who are diagnosed with diabetes, before they become pregnant, are three to four times more likely to have a child with one or more birth defects. These include heart defects, brain, spine and kidney defects. They also warn of oral clefts and limb deficiencies.
They say some mothers who get gestational diabetes, or pregnancy induced diabetes, have risks too. Researchers believe some women, who were seriously overweight when they became pregnant, may have had diabetes but hadn't been diagnosed yet.
Birth defects affect one in 33 newborns and are a leading cause of infant deaths. And while this study makes the connection between diabetes in women and birth defects, the cause of most birth defects remains unknown.
