Pitt County Memorial Hospital will remain a Level 1 Trauma Center until 2013.

The NC Office of Emergency Medical Services and the Committee on Trauma of the American College of Surgeons have both re-designated the hospital's status. That came after a two day visit to the hospital in March.

PCMH admits roughly 2,000 trauma patients a year, and the hospital first received the Level 1 designation in 1985.

To Jeff..I'm sure it comes down to recruitment, and the amount of money the hospital is willing to pay. One pediatric surgeon, on call 24/7, demands mega bucks. Besides that, I'm sure their is a shortage nationwide. Maybe PCMH sends their patients requiring surgery to Duke until a new hire takes place. I'm sure other surgeons on staff can perform surgeries depending on the age of the child.

How about telling use the rest of the story ...like what a Level 1 Trauma designation means and how do you get the designation ?

PCMH received Level 1 without having a pediatric surgeon on staff. The pediatric surgeon PCMH had left last month. This means pediatrics needing surgery will be operated on by a surgeon having minimal pediatric training? Does the public know this? Parents, you need to start asking questions!
