Two schools systems and one grocery store chain in the East have been honored for energy conservation.
The Wayne County school system, the Nash-Rocky Mount school system and Food Lion have been honored for energy conservation.
They have been named "Energy Star" leaders for "demonstrating a commitment to environmental stewardship while also lowering energy costs."
School officials also say 10 Wayne County schools have also earned the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's prestigious "Energy Star" rating, the national symbol for superior energy efficiency and environmental protection.
The schools include: Eastern Wayne Elementary, Goldsboro High, Greenwood Middle, Meadow Lane Elementary, North Drive Elementary, Northeast Elementary, Northwest Elementary, Rosewood Elementary, Rosewood Middle, and School Street Elementary.
“Chris Barnes, the district’s Energy Manager, and Sprunt Hill, Assistant Superintendent of Auxiliary Services, have helped improve energy performance by managing energy strategically across the district and making cost-effective improvements to schools,” said Dr. Steven Taylor, WCPS Superintendent. “Their efforts further reinforce the district’s and Board of Education’s commitment to financial and environmental stewardship.”
Officials say "commercial buildings that earn the 'Energy Star' rating use an average of 40 percent less energy than typical buildings and also release 35 percent less carbon dioxide into the atmosphere."
There are four "Energy Star" leaders in North Carolina, say officials. They are Wayne County Schools, Nash-Rocky Mount Schools, Yadkin County Schools, and Food Lion.

Why doesn't Pitt country try to reduce their energy costs and pollution as well? They should reduce their parking lots and encourage more kids and staff to bike and walk to school, too.
