Front loading washing machines clean clothes with a minimum of energy and water, compared to top loaders. But, the thing that makes them green can also sometimes lead to odor problems.
the way the tub sits, on its side, can lead to water staying in the machine and turning stagnant, and the tight fitting rubber gaskets can develop mold.
Experts recommend you run a cycle with only hot water and bleach once a month, and leave the door open between cycles to dry the innards out.

HE=High Efficiency It is no more expensive than for top loaders, only it is formulated for front loaders. Forgot to add that I do not have the bases for my set. I figured that at $150 each base for W & D, that I am not incapable of bending over to get the clothes in & out. Besides, I have cabinets & shelves in my laundry area, so the base was not feasible. You could build your own base to raise the set off the floor. Last year, Sears sold 50,000 sets of the Kenmore W & D($600). Have been told by a person that works at Sears that there are going to be a very limited number of sets($600) available this year. If you can get it, the Kenmore set for $600 is unbeatable. It would be worth it to wait outside for the doors to open on BF just to be first in line for this set. Just like anything you buy, the longevity of it is determined by how you care for it.
