A higher sales tax means North Carolina consumers will get a larger break when they purchase energy-efficient appliances compared to a year ago.
The sales-tax holiday on so-called Energy Star appliances like clothes washers, freezers and air conditioners will be held Friday, Saturday and Sunday statewide.
The holiday was first held last November when the sales tax rate consumers paid on merchandise was 6.75 percent in most counties. Now, it's 7.75 percent.
Fran Preston with the North Carolina Retail Merchants Association says retailers are planning special sales on the products to coincide with the holiday.
Other Energy Star items that qualify for the sales tax exemption include refrigerators, some heat pumps, ceiling fans, dehumidifiers and programmable thermostats.

On Friday Nov.6, 2009 we purchased a new heat pump system from a local HVAC dealer for approx. $4,700.00 and received the Manufacturer's Tax Credit Certificate showing that the system we purchased is a product that qualifies for the federal tax credit. When we asked about the North Carolina "Energy Star" sales tax holiday the dealer said it only applied to retail stores like Wallmart, Lowe's, etc. so we had to pay the state and local taxes. As far as I know all requirements to qualify for sales tax exemption were met. The HVAC unit is to be installed at our home. We paid the dealer in full by check that day. The system is to be installed as soon as the dealer receives it from the manufacturer. After getting more information on the sales tax holiday we will now try to get a refund of the taxes that the dealer collected in error from us.

"Hello?" was rude to "Ticked Off." This tax free weekend was first held a year ago but is not a law. "Ticked Off" must be an informed citizen even to purchase an energy efficient appliance. Thank you "Ticked Off" for being a concerned individual. I didn't vote for Bev either. I don't anybody who did.

This weekend tax break has been state law for more than one year, Ticked Off, so I'd suggest that you become a more informed citizen and learn the laws of our state. That and go back to Lowe's and see if they'll refund your taxes for they should have said something too.
