It looks like recycling has fallen by the wayside for some North Carolina residents.

The state Department of Environment and Natural Resources said
Friday an annual waste management report for fiscal year 2007-2008
shows local governments collected 90,000 tons less of recycled
products compared to the year before.

Total recycled goods dropped by almost 7 percent, from 1.35
million tons to 1.26 million tons.

The report determined the decrease was largely attributed to a
drop in yard waste cleanup and tire recycling.

Local government officials say that despite the drop, they are
optimistic about curbside recycling programs that collect paper and
beverage containers.

The report lists these programs with a 28 percent increase over the last decade.

My family would happily recycle if there were a recycling program in place in this town. Instead, we have to drive about 10 miles to get to a recycling drop-off.

I stopped recycling when I watched the men taking my garbage throw my recyclables and my trash into the same bin. You aren't going to tell me that they separated it when them got to the landfill. I think it's a good idea too but I'm not going to waste my time washing out cans and finding a place to store them till they get taken away so that they can all get put with the rest of the trash.

Well people are buying less. I for one think it is a good idea and do it. We fill a 35 gal can in two weeks.
