A two day symposium at ECU that started Thursday is focusing on the lessons learned from Hurricane Floyd.

Wednesday marked the 10 year anniversary of Floyd making landfall.

Researchers, scientists and politicians are among those attending the event.

Former Governor Jim Hunt, who was in office when Floyd struck, and Richard Moore, who served under him at the time as Secretary of Crime Control and Public Safety, were among the speakers Thursday.

Hunt said "Where are we now? How vulnerable are we? What do we do? We can do some things now, it may take two or three years but if the hurricanes do not come for two or three years we will have it all done by then. We will protect our citizens and not have that terrible damage and especially will not have 51 citizens killed."

Friday's keynote speaker is Laura Furgione, the local warning meteorologist during Floyd. She's now an assistant administrator with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association.
