Another fire in Kinston Thursday caused extensive damage to a home. No injuries were reported.
Fire officials say things could have been much worse because there were no smoke detectors inside.
A spokesperson for the Washington Fire and Rescue Department says smoke detectors double your rate of getting out of a home without injury.
It's suggested that a smoke detector be placed in each bedroom and outside of each bedroom. Officials say there should be detectors on all levels of the home.
"Smoke alarms in the home is what that is going to get you out of the home. It is going to wake you up and give you the opportunity to get you out of the home at night" says Jasper Hardison of the Washington Fire & Rescue
"Without smoke alarms more than likely you are not going to know you have a fire in your home until it is to late", he added.
Hardison says you should change your batteries every year when you change the time on your clocks. It is also good to check your detectors every month and replace smoke detectors every ten years.
