The Pitt County Coalition for Educating Black Children says there are clear signs African American students aren't getting an equal education in Pitt County.

The coalition invited the Pitt County Board of Education and the Greenville Parents Association to sit down and start talking
the achievement gap, suspension rate of African Americans, and how they're forced to miss school because they can't afford proper uniforms.

The coalition says they now have a court order that forces the other two parties to start making some changes...but those groups didn't show up.

The coalition's next step is to schedule another meeting which they hope to do in the next few weeks.

Pitt County School spokeswoman Heather Mayo says the school board did not attend the meeting because when it was originally planned the judge had not yet signed off on a mediation order and they didn't want to do anything illegal.

Mayo says now that the order is signed they will let the coalition help advise them, but the board will continue to lead discussions and make the decisions.

It's amazing to see how some of these students act on court and in the stands...cursing,bad sportsmanship, wearing clothes way too small. There are those students who have such miserable home lives that they bring it into the school system by tormenting their peers. No wonder these children don't learn, too busy releasing anger on others. It's a sad situation and it goes back to the parents' involvment in their children's lives. We can only pray that this reality improves.

It doesn't matter what color you are, you get the same amount of education you want to recieve. Uniforms were a bad idea in the first place but cannot help that now. I'm so tired of hearing about race. There are more important things in this world then color, so just get over yourselves and take responsibility for your actions and of your children's. If you don't have money then go get a job at Mc'D's because they will hire you so there is no excuse for not being able to pay for a polo and a nice pair of paints.

How about the students who don't understand the homework and the parents that can't help them? How are we supposed to solve that problem.? My mother could not help me with my homework and sometimes it was hard to do. My teacher helped me the next day. So we need teachers more like that. Guess what? I am a black women who has came along way.
