Through a source very close to ECU head football coach Skip Holtz, WITN first broke the story that Holtz has turned down a job offer to become the head coach at Syracuse.

When asked if Holtz did indeed turn down the job Holtz responded to WITN sports director Billy Weaver by stating "It's true."

The AutoZone Liberty Bowl will be hosting a press conference today, Thursday, December 11, from 3:30pm to 4:30 pm Central Time.

East Carolina head coach Skip Holtz and Kentucky head coach Rich Brooks will participate in the press conference.

Stay tuned to WITN and witn.com for the latest from Memphis, Tennessee.

Here's the official release from East Carolina University:

GREENVILLE, N.C. - East Carolina Head Football Coach Skip Holtz announced Thursday that he has withdrawn his name from consideration and declined further discussions regarding the head football coaching position at Syracuse University.

Holtz, who led the Pirates to a 27-24 victory over Tulsa to earn the program's first Conference USA Championship Saturday, provided closure to the situation prior to a scheduled AutoZone Liberty Bowl press conference in Memphis Thursday afternoon.

"While it is always flattering for others to have an interest in your abilities, I simply am too focused on our preparations for the bowl game and many other of our short and long-term goals to fairly evaluate what I feel is a promising situation at Syracuse." Holtz said. "I appreciate Syracuse's interest but that certainly is a direct reflection on what our players, coaches and the Pirate Nation have been able to accomplish, especially through a season that featured so much adversity."

Holtz has directed East Carolina to a 9-4 record in 2008, the program's highest single-season win total since 1999. The Pirates will meet Southeastern Conference-member Kentucky in the AutoZone Liberty Bowl Jan. 2 vying for their 10th victory, which would be a first for ECU in a season since the 1991 campaign.

Mr. quinn: For a mature individual as you have stated your sensitivity is elevated! Secondly I expressed my opinion just like you eloquently voice yours! Thirdly before Pete Carroll's(PC) arrival USC couldn't sell a ticket! The LA Coliseum holds at least 93K. Prior to PC USC averaged 50K. They were lucky to go to a second tier bowl. Believe me they were that bad. In fact the year ECU went to the fruit bowl, oops excuse me the Peach Bowl ECU finished ahead of USC in the final poll(s). I am NOT afraid or ashamed to reveal that. What bothers me about SOME ECU fans is their [hyper inflated heads]. Whether you like it or NOT ECU is NOT ready for the big CFB boys. Finally Mr. quinn: "Life's to short...". Like I said before it's a good thing you stated that you did NOT major in English. How about life's [too] short... Oh, I forgot you were an Art major. A simple preposition NOT correctly placed in a sentence by a former college student is absolutely unforgivable grammar, Sir. Good day!

Pete Carroll claims one NCAA championship that he does NOT have. The 2004 season ended with LSU winning as well as USC. Pete Carroll claims a share of the NCAA championship that year. He, along with every other Div 1 coach agreed to let the BCS's decision be the final say so. But when his failure to appear against LSU in "The Big Game" he decided to lay to claim to 1/2 of the championship. He and the USC team had no claim on 1/2 of anything. The LSU Togers won the BCS championship, PERIOD. A coach that will agree to one thing and then go back on his word has no morals.

Deadfish, why so negative? So you are a big USC fan. Pete Carroll has a great resume, everybody knows that. But to get to that point you have to start somewhere. Period. So bashing our present head coach, athletic director, college, etc. What is that going to prove? Everyone knows USC record, and the records behind most of the BCS schools. Being larger institutions with all their funding has ALOT perks. TONS, in fact. I'm sure USC is a fab institution. Basically, football is just a game. Fun to watch and play, but it doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things. Life's to short to waste time putting down everybody else for whatever reason. This comes from 41 yrs of experience. "Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great people make you feel that you, too, can become great." Mark Twain. Sorry, I missed 60 minutes. I crashed early so I could get up and go surfing.

Sam: I [believe] ECU wouldn't fare well facing LSU. Against South Carolina ECU has a tiny slight chance IMHO. Be careful with your "all of a sudden" wishes. They might bite you unexpectedly... Some of you might remember ECU beating PAC-10 Stanford. ECU coached then by Mr.Lewis! That one is for Mr. Barry! Had ECU faced USC the final score definitely would have been different, right? Auburn's new HC hiring has drawn hot criticism from every direction. He was 5-14 at Iowa State, go figure. They interviewed Buffalo HC Turner Gill who is black so they can say they are fair minded. Please comment on that one... Besides Barry who else watched USC Pete Carroll segment in CBS 60 Minutes last night? Later Pirate fans!

Hay Millie, what is so sad about this? I have met Terry Holland on many occasions and he is the complete opposite of arrogant. He is a very friendly man that will come up and start up a friendly conversation with you. I like Terry Holland very well. Hey Barry, I may be wrong but I beleive that ECU is one better #28. For all of those people saying that Kentucky will pound ECU, are you that stupid? Plus, ECU may be in a non-BCS conference, but we beat the ACC Champions and beat a team tied for second in the Big East. Oh did I mention Conference champs in one of the higher class bowls, ranked about 9th or 10th, or somewhere very close to it. I was origionally expecting South Carolina or LSU instead of Kentucky, therefore I was shocked, and the pirates will have several of the guys back from injury coming from having 4 weeks off. I expect to see the same pirates that there were in the first 2 weeks of the season.

Posted by: Storm Location: Greenville on Dec 15, 2008 at 02:49 PM
Millie obviously has no attachment to ECU athletics. We should be proud and very optimistic at the direction that ECU is going in most of our Div. 1 sports programs. I am from out of state and there hasn't been a year that I can remember that more friends of mine have commented about how recognizable ECU is on a national level and tha is thanks VERY much in part to Terry Holland. We have a football schedule that we can look forward to for the next nine years. Whether Holtz stays or goes he has left his mark on our football program with several of the most talked about and televised wins we have ever had. Let's face it, we are not a BCS school but we are a school that regularly contends with some of the top ranked teams in the country. If Skip decides to go for more money at a BCS school can you blame him? I assume that every submitter has stayed with their very first job based on some of their comments below. Holtz and Holland are worth every penny. Millie's comments aren't worth a dime.

Posted by: Millie Location: Windsor on Dec 15, 2008 at 11:30 AM
I was hoping Skip was going to "skip out" and take that overpaid, arrogant Terry Holland with him. It's a sad day at ECU.

Posted by: Barry Location: Greenville on Dec 15, 2008 at 10:15 AM
Coach M: Let me retract my last sentence, please. Spelling and grammar is secondary here to what truly matters- football!

Posted by: Barry Location: Greenville on Dec 15, 2008 at 09:39 AM
Coach M: The 3 defeats in a row being correlated with The NC State loss is supposition, at best. There were undoubtledly many other contributing factors, e.g. the other team (remember they are trying to win too!), injuries, suspensions, the shape of the football being oblong, fate, etc. To blame these losses, or any football team being defeated anywhere in America, on one causal factor is grossly overly simplistic. As it stands, the Pirates are 9-4, & show up at #29 in the polls. Thus, I would agree with you that ECU is a good team. Maybe when Skip leaves in the next year or so for a big paycheck, you can become the Head Coach at ECU, Coach M. I believe that your teams have never lost a game given you are not even familiar with the term "lose".

Deadfish and all of the other disgruntled naysayers; be thinking about you while walking down Beale street. Merry Christmas!

Posted by: Big T Location: greenville on Dec 15, 2008 at 08:59 AM
Deadfish - I absolutely favor a CFB playoff system, maybe similar to the NFL. What grade do I get while we are evaluating everyone. I'm sure I get high marks for vocabulary which may be skewed by grammar/punctuation. Give me a grade professor. BTW, I agree that barry and piratelady are both well versed. Another issue; I would be very disappointed should ECU fail to achieve victory against hapless Kentucky. ECU may indeed be over-rated but KU is just plain pitiful. And finally, deadfish, the moderator doesn't just omit anti-ECU sentiment. I have penned much prose that was in response to anti-ECU sentiment and failed to make the cut. Transplant yankee, PSU curmudgeon dave seems to be the only sattirist consistently published!

Posted by: joepirate Location: greenville on Dec 15, 2008 at 08:58 AM
Coach M..you are right about ECU. I never said they are a great team, but they are a good, championship winning team. Your comment is true, but you are not taking into account injuries. Losing your leader in the locker room (quentin cotton) is tough for any team. it takes time for the players to work into their new role. Pierre bell all the sudden had to become the leader on defense, and that takes time no matter who is coaching. Florida is a great team, but if tebow (their locker room leader) gets injured, it would take them time to adjust as well.

Posted by: Coach M Location: Rocky Mount on Dec 15, 2008 at 02:23 AM
You don't drop 3 in a row because you loose a tough game against a rival. Great teams get their head straight and continue winning next week. You put the game the previous week behind you, win or loose. A great team wouldn't have let this effect them. ECU is a good team not a great one.

Posted by: Barry Location: Greenville on Dec 14, 2008 at 10:04 PM
deadfish: very good story on Pete C., the man is to be commended. I most definately favor a playoff system; I have to believe that the vast majoriy of college football fans do. I prefer 16 team playoff, but as this may be too cumbersome at the moment, would settle for 8 teams. A playoff would be GREAT entertainment for we CFB junkies. I believe that the bowl games might continue in altered form: the big 4 games (your Rose Bowl included) alternate as Championship host, while the other bowl games continue as interesting match-ups for teams that have decent years (as it is at present). For brevity sake, I won't delve into here how all D1 schools, BCS and non BCS, get in on his. I'll even allow a little "weight" for currrent BCS schools if it means inclusion for those schools that meet certain qualification standards. ECU would meet these standards; adios UAB.

Posted by: joepirate Location: greenville on Dec 14, 2008 at 09:09 PM
deadfish...your saying he lost the locker room?? things happen during the season, the team was frustrated after losing to a rival. if anything, your comment proves my point of skip being a great coach. a great coach gets his team focused after frustration sets in. what happened after that 3 game losing streak?? Rest my case. as for your recruit rankings. all of the teams you listed are bcs conference teams. what does it take for you to understand that if you are in a non bcs conference, you have to find diamonds in the rough (i.e chris johnson, aundre allison, quentin cotton) because the top high school athletes do not want to go to non-bcs schools. recruting on the non bcs level is about getting recruits that you can develop, and skip knows how to develop. if you dont believe me, ask va tech and WVU. check their recruiting rankings on rivals, i bet they are higher than us. Rest my case.

quinn: You stated: "Yes I have a Art Degree, a double major in fact". I was taught to say an art degree is proper... Mr. quinn you simply chose the wrong preposition. I'll go further by saying that's simple grammar, period...

Posted by: deadfish Location: nc on Dec 14, 2008 at 06:55 PM
quinn: You said: "I too write like a college student". With ALL due respect at least you did NOT say you are an English major. Barry and The Pirate Lady are the best writers here. I give myself a humble B ! BTW if you have a chance 60 Minutes is going to have tonight a segment about USC Pete Carroll which depicts his contribution to decreasing gang violence in LA. Would someone please tell me if Mr. Skip Holtz is involved in any community activities? I hope you don't say anything about the Furniture Fair commercial... One more thing how many of you favor a CFB play-off system? Thank you

Posted by: quinn Location: obx on Dec 14, 2008 at 12:53 PM
Deadfish... Yes I have a Art Degree, a double major in fact. It also means that I had to take ALL the courses necessary for graduation from ECU. You also have to be a complete idiot despite your chemistry background to think that getting a degree in Art is easy. I also have a degree in History as well. I have shown my work up and down the East Coast and plan to expand to showing in galleries on the west coast as well. Some notable people who have my work are Garrett Dutton ( G LOVE and Special Sauce, Eddie Veddar, and Kathy Zuckerman aka "Gidget"( The one the movie was based on). I too write like a college student. Honestly, what is the big deal about past and present students taking pride in where they went to school? Some people don't have the luxury.

Posted by: Barry Location: Greenville on Dec 14, 2008 at 10:14 AM
deadfish: Me thinks thou doth protest too much. Is a little Pirate success bothering you? No one here is claiming national championship, merely happy that the Pirates have turned the season around in a positive way after the losses that you so frequently cite and several key injuries & two suspensions. If you are bothered this year, just wait till next year, the Pirates are set-up for quite a team and year! Please don't exaggerate or extrapolate too much on what I am saying here. I am not predicting top 5, but we will be better than most. I kindly encourage you to embrace the Pirates while keeping USC as your primary team. This may prove more rewarding than continual sniping. Enjoy your Sunday. "Where It Is A First Down... PIRATES!"

Posted by: deadfish Location: nc on Dec 14, 2008 at 09:40 AM
Mr. Alex: May I refresh your memory, Sir? Didn't the team almost fall apart when Mr. Holtz lost the locker room thus losing three games in a row? Did you say Tulsa one of the offenses in the country? Would you like to tell us who gave them that rating? Next time you talk about offenses how about Texas, Oklahoma or Florida? Pardon me, I almost forgot Texas Tech! Didn't Houston crush your "superb" defense? ECU is facing Kentucky in the Liberty Bowl. KY finished 6-6. True you don't control that. According to your logical trend ECU should demolish KY, right? We'll find-out won't we? Stay tuned...

Posted by: ECUsux on Dec 14, 2008 at 09:05 AM
I don't care about ECU, period. Just a second rate team in a second rate conference in a second rate state. I think I will watch Kentucky pound them into the dirt, but we can't bash you precious ECU, can we? I agree with Rob. They are overrated.

Posted by: Alex Location: Vanceboro on Dec 14, 2008 at 08:27 AM
Overrated? they beat Va. Tech, West Va. & one of the best offenses in the country in Tulsa. I think you need to think before you talk.

Posted by: Rob Location: NC on Dec 12, 2008 at 10:29 PM
ECU is so overrated. Go Kentucky!

Posted by: Eagleman Location: Asheville on Dec 12, 2008 at 07:46 PM
Something for Redskins fans: Maybe they will win the Super Bowl if there's a players strike, like they did in 82 and 87. Or maybe the top 2 teams in the NFC will lose their top 2 QBs like in 91 when the 49ers and Eagles were down to their #3 QB giving the redskins an easy road to the Super Bowl. Now the Packers of the 60's, the Steelers of the 70's and the 49ers of the 80's - those were true great championship teams. The redskins never were.

WHY would I be jealous of a school(ECU) that is rated #206 academically nationally? Please save it. Let's get to real CFB business. quinn: Art, what is that? I have at least 50 college credit hrs. in Chem. and 45 in Bio. BTW I write like a former college student which is more than I can say about a few bloggers here, thank you. joepirate: ECU recruiting according to you impressive, please? Holtz job impressive, it depends how you look at it. Let's take recruiting first since it is one of my CFB strengths. According to: http://rivals100.rivals.com/teamrank.asp?SID=880 UNC is #6, Duke #42 and NC ST #55; ECU #79. Attitude, wait a minute? Mr. Holtz lost the locker room and that is why they lost three in a row. Two key players suspended and two DUI's in the last two years. Thank PSU for more discipline infractions! If Skip is so qualified WHY didn't he get an interview from Auburn, Clemson or TN Vols for that matter? Instead he gets a call from a sorry program like 'Cuse. Rest my case.

Posted by: Big T Location: greenville on Dec 12, 2008 at 11:29 AM
Dave the great...? phblllllt! You think ECU is in weak conference. What about PSU? You will find out 1/1/09 how weak PSU's conference is. When my HATED team USC unfortunately "walks the dog", to my sad displeasure, all over your beloved Nittany Lions. The only joy I will feel in that defeat is the amount or sorrow it will bestow upon you brother dave. You think ECU has lousy, ignorant, and arrogant fans? What about PSU? Look in the mirror pal, if the mrs. will let you! I'm sure she knows what the outcome will be, Is she even going to LET you watch the game?

Posted by: Big T Location: greenville on Dec 12, 2008 at 11:24 AM
Mr Anonymous is probably Dave. ECU won so Dave is not supposed to be here. He said if ECU won he wouldn't come play in the sand box anymore. I personally hope he does NOT honor that. I like Dave in the mix. Every classroom needs a DUNCE.

LOL @ deadfish saying skip didnt take the coaching job because of cost of living!!!! hahahaha...really? Was that serious?

Posted by: joepirate Location: greenville on Dec 12, 2008 at 09:06 AM
deadfish and dave...if you honestly think that taking a team that won 3 games in two years and turning them around to c-usa champions in 4 years does not impress "the big boys", then you are living on another planet. They always say to give a coach 4 years so he can get his recruits into the program before you pass judgement on the coach. Coach Holtz changed the attitude of this entire program, and his success started in his first year. We have gradually improved each year culminating in the c-usa championship with all of skips recruits (except for 5th yr. seniors, etc.) not only did we win the c-usa championship with his recruits, but we did so with half of our starters injured. He has clearly proven that he can run a successful college football program, and could do so in two different recruiting areas (connecticut and NC). you are fooling yourself if you really think skip is not cut out for "the big boys". i would be glad if we can keep him for 1 more year. GO PIRATES!! C-USA Champs!

Posted by: quinn Location: Outer Banks on Dec 12, 2008 at 08:51 AM
I would love to know where deadfish went to school. What a hater!!! The same for Mr. Anonymous. As a grad. of ECU's School of Art, I'm proud to call myself a Pirate! So all you ECU bashers go waste someone else's time with your negativity! I'm glad Skip Holtz is staying for now. Our coaches are doing a great job. So what if you guys don't think ECU or our sports program as being big enough to get into the BCS program. We've always been underdogs. Just look at what Chris Johnson has done for the Tenn. Titans this year. And he was booed by their fans when they signed him. He shut them the hell up now, didn't he! As for Mr. Terry Holland and Mr. Skip Holtz, thank you for doing such a great job! Also congrads to E. Davis of Manteo!GOOOOOOOOO PIRATES!!!!!!!!!

Chris: Your ignorance is noted. Pirate Lady: Please; Mr. Skip Holtz résumé is NOT thick enough to be ND HC. It doesn't matter if his last name is Holtz or King Kong! Please look at the big boys credentials of the big boys schools. Check Pete Carroll's(USC), Urban Meyer(FL), Nick Saban(AL), Butch Davis(UNC) and Mack Brown. They ALL earned their stripes and have very thick résumés. Concerning Syracuse Mr. Skip Holtz was smart NOT taking the job. Two reasons IMHO: 1. Numbers such as cost of living. 2. A program that needs rebuilding big time NOT to mention very little to gain if resurrection is accomplished. Former Orange man Doug Marrone New Orleans Saints OC is about to become 'Cuse HC. Notice OC of the NO Saints as part of his résumé. Do you get my hint? Rest my case. Thank you

deadfish, my friend, that was a very un-deadfish like post. That quasi-vitriolic post may lead to suggestions that we revoke your USC Ambassadorship to Piratedom. Dave(The Greek): before you resume exodus resulting from your own ill-fated prediction about ECU v. Tulsa, I would like to call to your (ADHD) attention to yet another prediction gone wrong. Dave, you also guaranteed that Skip would leave for Syracuse. Here is free career advice, if Miss Cleo ever gets fired from her psychic gig, you will not even sniff an interview. Once again I am please to see Skip stay here in Greenville to keep the pirate nation at bay.But ND will be calling him when Charlie is booted next near even if Charlie goes 9-3.Then that when we will have to search for a coach to take us out of C-USA and on to ACC, Big East or who knows SEC a BCS conference. It will be great with the expansion of Dowdy-Ficklen who knows what may happens. If Skip stays he will bring great product to suceed if not we can find someone that will.GO PIRATES!!!!!!!!!! ARGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHH.

pirate fans, please vote for ECU on the pontiac game changing moment ... it could mean 100,000 dollars to our school. Also, for those people who want to bash us for being smalltime or whatever, take your negativity to another school s website and as Yosimity Sam once said "BACK OFF"

Posted by: The Pirate Lady Location: Grimesland on Dec 11, 2008 at 08:08 PM
Well, I'm just glad all of this is behind us now so that we can focus on the bowl game and supporting our team. We have Skip for a little while at least...you know he's holding out for the ND job. And if he's ever in the position to get it, who could blame him? But for now, I'm glad he's staying, even though I felt in my heart he would take the 'Cuse job.

Sam: Please understand that big time CFB programs mean having big time CFB credentials, OK? Do you get it? Pardon my slang but Mr. Skip Holtz ain't got it yet to coach the big boys of the big schools. Are you with me, Sir? I know why you do that. You want to inflate ECU to another level. Once more C-USA championship or NOT ECU is NOT there with the big boys. It doesn't matter how hard you and other out of touch ECU fans try. Please accept that they are NOT ready, period. Thank you

Sounds like the Syracuse program would require so much rebuilding that they might not be competitive for years to come. Unfortunately for Pirate fans, there are other programs looking to fill head coaching positions that are also "very promising."

Posted by: Sam Location: Williamston on Dec 11, 2008 at 05:06 PM
I also looked at an article on espn.com and have seen about 6-7 different candidates who have been or are going to talk to Auburn, and Skip Holtz is not mentioned one time in that article. Apparently, he is here to stay and keep bringing ECU football on the rise, just like the rest of ECU. Yaaaaaay!
