Sources close to ECU head football coach Skip Holtz tell WITN that Holtz has turned down an offer to become the new head coach at Syracuse.

The deal to coach the Orange is said to be worth a total of nearly $12 million.

WITN will continue to follow this story and affiliates in Memphis are scheduled to attend Thursday's Liberty Bowl press conference in which Skip Holtz will attend.

Sam you don't know much must be the williamston education. First off Miss will never leave the big-12. The big 12 is a superior conf. Also it is rediculas that the state legislates who a school must play. UNC and NC State get nothing for this. ECU gets all the glory if they win and if carolina or state win they get the "you should have won" routine. Tell me where thats fair or if you were carolina or state how you can get up for those games. I suppose you should change the Pac 10s name as well. And what does kentucky basketball have to do with anything you seriously dont think they would leave the powerhouse SEC the biggest moneymaking conf in both sports (outside ACC basketball) come on.

To that so called wolfpack>pirates, name some KEY STATE PLAYERS that were hurt besides Russell Wilson for a few games. As a pirate fan, I do actually hate UNC worse and will congratgulate State for their big win over UNC. I agree with you that ECU should keep playing State and also UNC, why, more money put into the schools and the economy of the eastern half of NC, especially, Greenville, Raleigh, and Chapel Hill. About the conference change, in a few years don't be suprised if Iowa State goes into the Big 10 and joins in with Iowa, or if Missouri goes in, because they and Illinois have had a rival for quite sometime and are looking at getting into the same conference. The Big 10 (which should be the Big 11 cause they have 11 teams) is not going to take anybody out. They have talked over the last decade about trying to get 12 teams which I think they should do. Kentucky is a basketball school. It would do great for the Big 10. The Big 10 typically thrives on basketball & 1 FB rival.

Actually, it was the 92 Peach Bowl( my mistake) and it was a long time ago. But it was a hell of a great game to watch! Anyway, State leads ECU 16-10. ECU has won seven out of the last 12 football games against NC State. Either way, there is nothing like watching a good game between two rival schools. Whoever they may be. Or be it college or NFL.

Tom: You sound like a politician changing subjects deliberately two fold: 1. Avoid addressing the issue he/she is asked to respond to. 2. Inject their own agenda. Last but not least both above are accompanied by a disgusting smirk, go figure... We are clearly addressing a specific CFB subject: objection denied! Thank you

Posted by: Tom Location: Greenville on Dec 12, 2008 at 03:17 PM
Well I'll get ragged for changing the subject, but a real easy way to shut down the Wolfpack fans is to compare BASKETBALL coach records LOL!!! I do believe it's Coach M 1 and Coach Lowe of the mighty Wolfpack 0. LOL!! LOL!!

Posted by: Ron Location: Greenville on Dec 12, 2008 at 02:57 PM
Whoa...there Quinn, that really put a hurting on the pack fans, bringing up a game 17 years ago, C'mon man we can do better than that. geeesh

Posted by: deadfish Location: nc on Dec 12, 2008 at 02:23 PM
PACK1: I'm an USC Trojan fan. Objectively stated 17 years ago or not the Pirates beat your 'Pack-fact in that 'Fruit Bowl! You can always irritate them by flaunting your most recent victory. Recent is always more effective, period! I should have read over carefully after I was done writing before posting. I made the mistake of writing with incentives twice making my sentence unfortunately redundant and poorly written. I am glad I caught that before one of these Pirates let me know! Later!

Posted by: PACK1 on Dec 12, 2008 at 12:19 PM
quinn that was 17 years ago. Nobody cares anymore.

Posted by: deadfish Location: nc on Dec 12, 2008 at 11:52 AM
~ALPHA Female~: It has been posted here that Mr. Skip Holtz' salary with incentives maxes out at $1 Mil/year with incentives. You have to consider Syracuse cost of living and their program which is NOT like it used to be plus the tough recruiting difficulties NOT to mention the risk if he fails. He played it safe by staying at ECU. You would have done the same. It is called job security.

Hey DF, first off I will have to agree on the correction of Bobby, cut the man some slack, he was absent the day they learned to conjuagate a verb. Whats your take on the Liberty Bowl. I think ECU will hand Kentucky their backside on a platter. However, I personally would have liked a better opponent. Would have been a better reward given our wins in the face of so much adversity. Also, we CAN be notorious for beating a team we shouldn't (say .....USC)(that was just for you by the way) then losing to a team we should stomp, (such as the hapless wolfpack) Just was curious as to what you thought. At 6-6 come on, I am not that familiar with Kentuckys program. You being my NCAACFB guru, I thought you could shed some light? Perhaps?

Posted by: quinn Location: OBX on Dec 12, 2008 at 10:02 AM
To the Fans of the Wolfpack...I do believe WE beat you in a bowl game. The 1991 PEACH BOWL.

Posted by: ~ALPHA female~ Location: O84P on Dec 11, 2008 at 09:33 PM
I have a question. Remember I know nothing about sports...but this I'm wondering. If this coach turns down $12 million how much is he making at ECU?

Posted by: Old Salt Location: Greenville on Dec 11, 2008 at 09:11 PM
With a new locker room, practice field, pay raise and stadium expansion it makes sense to stay in Greenville where you are a celeb. No so in many other university cities.

Hope Skip stays to continue to rule the Pirate Nation. You have a wonderful family, and we enjoy, Our Football at ECU. Please don't leave!!!!

Also I have lived east of I-95 for my whole life except for when I attended NCSU and I actually love living down east. By the way I wouldn't say I'm talking trash but I speak the truth especially when ECU fans start bashing my Wolfpack. And I'm being truthful when I say I pull for ECU in sports except when they play the ACC*. The * is for UNC cause I hope they lose every game possible that is the real team I hate. And I hope the ECU and NCSU rivalry can continue because I do really feel it is a good rivalry for both schools.

Posted by: wolfpack>pirates on Dec 11, 2008 at 05:29 PM
To Sam, FYI we also played with many injuries TO OUR KEY PLAYERS so get your facts straight before you start that argument. Also who would the Big 12 kick out to get Arkansas and the same w/ the Big 10 and Kentucky? Your best bet would be the Big East if you wanted to win a few ball games cause you aren't going to do it in the SEC. And on a final note someone said something about usbeing jealous of ECU but in fact I believe ECU is jealous of NCSU and that school in Chapel Hill because you didn't get your 1st choice in schools

Posted by: deadfish Location: nc on Dec 11, 2008 at 05:20 PM
Bobby: I have a problem with your sentence construction. Anyway I figured out your meaning. I also have a problem with your; "great team and great school"labels. Good team I buy. A "great school" I do NOT. With ALL due respect ECU is rated #206 academically nationally therefore it contradicts your "great" adjective, Sir. Thank you

Posted by: Robert Location: Greenville on Dec 11, 2008 at 04:54 PM
Would all of you ECU haters like to put on pads and play a game of contact football against some of the ECU fans. I can arrange a field to play on. WE AT ECU BELEIVE IN "ACTION" NOT TALK. ACTION

Posted by: Mike Location: Greenville on Dec 11, 2008 at 03:47 PM
GO NOTRE DAME! Please finish at least 8-4 next year! You can do it Charlie Weis. Pirate Nation is pulling for you!

Posted by: Bobby Location: Greenville on Dec 11, 2008 at 03:34 PM
I have no problem with ECU either is the big heads the fans get. MOST just think they are something that really isn't. Great team, Great school, just think some of the fans need to step down off the pedestal once in awhile

Posted by: Sam Location: Williamston on Dec 11, 2008 at 03:32 PM
To Scotty and all of those State fans, you may hate me after I say this, but besides being an ECU fan, Florida State is my favorite and only liked ACC team. Hell with the Gators, I like the noles and the UGA bulldogs.

Posted by: Sam Location: Williamston on Dec 11, 2008 at 03:23 PM
To that so called wolfpack>pirates, which you should not call yourself we may of lost to UVA and played with many injuries TO OUR KEY PLAYERS UNLIKE STATE FYI, but we beat Virginia Tech who won the ACC championship, so don't even bring Duke in this, unless if you want to compare them to State or UNC. There were several N.C. State fans who acted like State won the National Championship or the Superbowl. Also don't be surprised to see Arkansas go Big 12 or Kentucky go Big 10. All you trash talking wolfpack and tarheels fans, how about move to the other side of I-95, cause we do not like having you living down east. This is pirate nation. This is for Susan of Kinston, I totally agree with what you are saying.

Posted by: Dwayne Location: Greenville on Dec 11, 2008 at 02:51 PM
Booby, I mean Bobby. I'll have kids in both schools soon. I do now and will support NC State and ECU. I'll always look forward to the ECU/Pack game. It's a great rivalry. Coach O'Brian is a great coach. Thank you for thinking I'm funny. My children don't. Anyway, your weak attempt to stir the pot failed. Enjoy the Pizza Bowl dude. We'll be walking in Memphis with our feet bout' 10 feet off of Beale.

ECU will NEVER and SHOULD NEVER be invited to join the SEC.

ECU is in a much better college town than Syracuse & i don't need to call my self Anonymous.

Posted by: Wolf Location: Puppies on Dec 11, 2008 at 02:31 PM
I love this State fans talking to much trash. You finished 6-6, enough said. As I recall, wasnt it the Pirates that got your last beloved coach fired just two years ago after getting whooped at home? If you wouldnt have gotten scared and decided to schedule a cupcake non-confernce schedule next year and get rid of the matchup with ECU in Greenville, then we would return the favor next year, but instead we will just whoop up on APP.

Posted by: Blake Location: Greenville on Dec 11, 2008 at 02:18 PM
Adam: come on man...SUPPORT!!! Are you sure you're an ECU fan? I agree trash talking does nothing but seriously with the majority of our starters out for some reason or another we did darn well. IF we had all of these guys back then we would be stacked honestly. All teams do have injuries and suspensions but we had FAR more, majority of them being GREAT ballplayers. Other teams don't have that happen often.

Posted by: Bobby Location: Greenville on Dec 11, 2008 at 02:07 PM
C'mon Dwayne LOL!!! LOL!!! If Tulsa turned it over 7 times, North Pitt could be them. Why in the world would you want to play the Wolfpack again????? You are funny

Posted by: redzone on Dec 11, 2008 at 01:46 PM
and if we would have dressed the nine starters that we had out against you guys that one would not have even been that close.

Posted by: Dwayne Location: Greenville on Dec 11, 2008 at 01:42 PM
To the Pack fan trashing ECU. Look at your record. I am glad to see State go bowling, but I'm not a Pack fan. Won't step down to your level. Go Pack. Go Pirates. We didn't pick Kentucky. I'd rather ECU play NC State in the Liberty Bowl and give you the spanking you deserve. Let Pack play Tulsa and see what happens. Get over your jealousy.

Posted by: Adam Location: Greenville on Dec 11, 2008 at 01:32 PM
Wow! Like I said in an early post, Our Pirate mouths is what leads us to so much junk getting talked to us. I am also tired of us giving the injury and suspended excuse. All teams have these, it's part of the game.

Posted by: Eagleman Location: Asheville on Dec 11, 2008 at 12:55 PM
Yo wolfpack, what do YOU know about football? Just going to mention one thing here: Had ECU had all their players (those injured and suspended), ECU could beat VT right now.

Posted by: todd Location: greenville on Dec 11, 2008 at 12:41 PM
w>p; 1) i don't see anybody looking at your coach. wonder why? 2) again, you are last in your conference (whether you 'consider' it or not) and we are first. you belong at the bottom with duke. by the way, we beat your conference champion. 3) rutgers is going to crush you in the pepperoni bowl. 4) find a raleigh website if you want to talk state. here, you're in the EAST. the east is pirate country. go back and share your triangle websites with the tarheels and dukies.

Posted by: ECU student Location: Greenville on Dec 11, 2008 at 12:20 PM
We were stunk too for a while until Skip turned our program around! So glad we get to keep him for a little while longer!!!!

Posted by: Anonymous on Dec 11, 2008 at 12:01 PM
Alex if Skip was concerned with going to a team that stinks, then why would he have come to ECU with their massive 3-21 record over two years that he inherited?

Posted by: wolfpack>pirates on Dec 11, 2008 at 11:59 AM
1) Skip made a great decision by not going to Syracuse because they have been terrible for years now and also ND will come calling next year 2) You beat VT and WV at the beginning of the year in which an upset is more likely to occur. (If you guys played VT now you would lose) 3) You will never get into the SEC because they all ready have 12 teams in the conference and that is all you need to have a conference championship game (which I would have preferred ECU in the ACC compared to BC) 4) Quit talking junk because if I remember correctly NCSU beat ECU 2 years in a row. 5) I don't really consider 4-4 finishing at the bottom of our conference when just about every team finished with the same recorded. Actually didn't UVA beat y'all in which they had a worst record than us thus means you would have probably finished at the very bottom with Duke.

Posted by: P&GCaseIH on Dec 11, 2008 at 11:35 AM
If you don't like ECU, fine! If you don't like Greenville, fine! But understand this. We like ECU because it is local, most people like me are alumni, and we support the east. People here take pride in local teams doing well. We don't jump on the band wagon with the first powerhouse team coming down the road. It is easy being a Florida, OU or Texas fan because they are winning. They are high powered schools with tons of kids lined up at the door to sign with them. ECU is not the same. These are our children, friends and brothers that play locally and are doing a great job of getting the spot light to shine on our slice of paradise. I AM A PIRATE!!!!! IF we win 9 games or 2, I AM A PIRATE!!!!!

Posted by: Scotty on Dec 11, 2008 at 11:35 AM
You can also tell that the Bowl committees don't care about ECU either for pitting them agains a 6-6 team. The Libery Bowl is a CUSA fans dream but to other teams it's just another lowly game.

Posted by: Alex Location: Vanceboro on Dec 11, 2008 at 11:22 AM
Syracuse has stunk for years. Good job skip

Posted by: Susan Location: Kinston on Dec 11, 2008 at 10:30 AM
If the stories are true, Thank-you Skip for an early Christmas present!!!!! And for Scotty, Deadfish, and the rest of you non-Pirate fans, just remember how much the Pirates support the Greenville economy and possibly you.

Posted by: Adam Location: Greenville on Dec 11, 2008 at 10:00 AM
Now I am a Pirate fan through and through, but before we start talking smack to the NCSU folks, we need to have somehting to back it up. We still have a lot of work to do. The last 2 years NCSU has feilded the 2 worst teams they have had in a long time, while ECU has had the 2 best years we have had in a long time (Conference Champions for the first time) and have still managed to lose to the Wolfpack. Our trash talking causes us more harm than good when we can't back it up. Hope we continue to improve so we can back it up on the field year in and year out. Congrats to the Pirates for a great season and conference title. Let's show the SEC we can beat one of their teams in the Liberty bowl.

Posted by: Dwayne Location: Greenville on Dec 11, 2008 at 09:59 AM
To all of the posters jealous of ECU. ECU fans of which I am are well aware that CUSA is not a strong conference. To tell us what we already know only shows how jealous you really are. That said, we have gone 1-3 against the ACC and that one win was against the 2008 ACC champion. We spanked West Virginia and now face an SEC team in the Liberty Bowl. So, while we may not be in a strong conference,we have beat Boise State 2007, VaTech 2008 conference champions and will likely end up ranked between 21st to 25th which is fairly realistic. And your point outside of extreme jealousy is?

Posted by: Anonymous on Dec 11, 2008 at 09:45 AM
Scotty---go back to Florida. You're in Pirate Country here.

Posted by: redzone Location: washington on Dec 11, 2008 at 09:44 AM
You need to do your research. TH asked to have the game moved to '10 for the unveiling of the new endzone project. He wanted NCSU and UNC there on the same year to sell tickets. Go check your archives on Pirate Radio and you will hear the interview with Troy D and TH. You're correct about finishing at 4-4 in the ACC. Oh, yeah UVA was at the bottom too. So as I see it it, if those teams would have been any lower that would have played one another for the C-USA championship. SEC? you may be right on that too. Their conference has so much depth that they may be looking to add a few cupcakes to the schedule.

Posted by: Scotty on Dec 11, 2008 at 09:39 AM
How can anybody be happy in Greenville with all of the crime there. I am a Gators fan so I have a right to talk and ECU is nowhere close to being a powerhouse. The best teams you played this year in VA Tech and they aren't that good. I wish ECU would play Florida so you Pirate fans could see your team and conference are very weak.

Posted by: Sam Location: Williamston on Dec 11, 2008 at 09:25 AM
Rick of Greenville, you are exactly right and Anonymous, I beleive you are right to, and when 2011 comes, especially if its the SEC we get into, it will be a sad day in West Raleigh and Chapel Hill and I will love every minute of it, we are still on the rise. You guys from Washington, shut up. Mark you might as well move to Raleigh and get out of ENC and redzone, if ECU was on the level as APP ST (which they are way above that), then NC State must be on a lower level than APP ST. Mark my words for your conference, THE GAY CC! That is all it is.

Posted by: Sam Location: Williamston on Dec 11, 2008 at 09:17 AM
I said it all along, Skip was not going to go to Syracuse. He and his family are extremely happy in Greenville. Scotty, it sounds like you may be a little greedy with the way that you were talking, Skip already has plenty of money, and could care less if he gets more or not. The key wins and championships are what counts for Skip, plus Skip is doing everything it takes for ECU to get in a BCS Conference as well, such as the Big East or the SEC. This is going to be a sad day for the N.C. State, UNC, and Wake Forest fans, and probably fans for UVA and VA Tech, because this is another thing that will get many HS Football players to lean more and more towards ECU. We have a huge chance at repeating and maybe three-peating with the fabulous recruiting class we have. But for right now, it's time to focus on embarrasing a Kentucky team who probably should not of even been a bowl.

Posted by: Todd Location: Greenville on Dec 11, 2008 at 09:06 AM
ahh, the ignorance of state fans. Bottom line is: 1) nobody wants your coach, so quit chatting about ours 2) you finished last in your conference, a conference who's champion we beat in charlotte. 3) enjoy your pizza bowl. i'll take a thin crust with mushrooms and onions. can you have it here in 30 minutes? 4) your AD backed out on playing us here next year (since we have everybody back, i'm sure). did you know that? that's why we had to schedule app state at the last minute. sounds like somebody (your athletic director) respects us. i expect the same from you.

Posted by: redzone Location: washington on Dec 11, 2008 at 09:03 AM
It's not trash talk! We are no powerhouse and you are not either. It will be nice to see EC in a BCS conference. It will make the in-state teams strength of schedule go up. Right now your power rating is about the same as App ST.

Posted by: Rick Location: Greenville on Dec 11, 2008 at 08:50 AM
NCSU - where lots of money buys mediocrity. LOL Hey NCSU fans - losers talk about their conference. Winners talk about championships. Remember that.

Posted by: Anonymous on Dec 11, 2008 at 08:44 AM
State barely won in a game that we gave away. But y'all go ahead and talk smack. We all know that game is a "super bowl" for you anyway. SU would of been at beast a lateral move for SH. Auburn would be a much better place to go, and I wouldn't blame SH for taking it if its offered. 2011 might be the year that ECU gets into a BCS conference. If that happens, wait till you hear what the triangle crowd will have to say then, LOL!

Posted by: Blake Location: Greenville on Dec 11, 2008 at 08:30 AM
Mark: I hate to say it but N.C. State didn't look extremely bad at the END of the season. Biggest player for you guys, and you better hope he stays or they're DONE, is the QB Wilson. He's GREAT! Yes they had some big wins but N.C. State has alwways had a bad habit that ECU haqs, playing with the competition. I agree ECU gets used but come on man he enjoys caching here, plain and simple. Yes he WIL leave at some point in time but why woulcn't he. He builds a team up to their potential and his job is over. Give credit where credit is due and quit being an enemy. ECU!!! BTW: ECu has much potential to move to another conference in the near funture and are FULLY capable of competing for some BCS bowls in the near future as well. GO ECU!!!

Posted by: Eric Location: chocowinity on Dec 11, 2008 at 08:10 AM
C-USA might be a junk conference with junk teams, but it is better to be at the top of C-USA than be the basement dweller annually at NC STATE. The wolfpeckers wil never get it done with O'Brien as coach. He will always be close or jusst over 500. Like it or not being in a better conference still does not get the pack better recruits. ECU will have better records against the same caliber schedule, which will help us out recruit the pack and set future butt whippins by the hands of ECU. I hope you get used to seeing outdated trophies and people with attitude problems cuz that is what happens when you are at the basement of the ACC. Who knows you might not even win more conference games than the Blue Devils next year.

Posted by: Reality Bites Location: G'ville on Dec 11, 2008 at 08:03 AM
Listen to that NCSU fan. Trash talking. That's funny...like NC State is a football powerhouse. How short that memory is of the NCSU vs. ECU match up. AS for Skip, although he turned down Syracuse... word has it that Auburn wants to talk as well.

Posted by: redzone Location: Washington on Dec 11, 2008 at 07:54 AM
I agree with Mark. Please let him stay in Greenville. MR. TOB is 2-0 against him while we are at our lowest. It's not going to get any better for ECU vs the ACC. UVA, VT, UNC & VT are in rebuilding now so Pirates you better buckle your chin straps come '10. We will be bringing the pain!!!

Posted by: Blog Refuter Location: NC on Dec 11, 2008 at 07:48 AM
He turned it down so that the players can focus on the Liberty Bowl. What a blow to a team's confidence when rumors about their coach leaving are rampant right before a bowl game...

Posted by: Mark Location: Washington on Dec 11, 2008 at 07:20 AM
Robert....LOL LOL LOL on your comment.."A beast in the East" LOL As a N.C. State fan I surely hope he stays, kinda getting used to beating him, that's nice!! It's just a little delay, that's all, when the chance comes around and it is one that he like, he will leave ECU, there is nothing here for him. A junk conference with junk teams in it. Skip is a great coach and he wants to play for National Championships, can't do that at ECU, just a stepping stone to the next level. All ECU does is get used

Posted by: Kim Location: Greenville on Dec 11, 2008 at 07:04 AM
Scotty, Who do you support? You must not have been watching the same ECU team that I was watching this year. We will come back strong on both sides of the line next year. Maybe money alone is not what motivates Skip and I salute him for it. There is something to be said today for raising a family in a great town and building a program to a level it hasn't been in recent history. The real problem in going to be Terry Holland finding other Atheletic Directors phoning in to schedule the Purple and Gold. Give Skip some credit where credit is do, football is happening at ECU. I am intelligent enought to know Skip will not be here forever, but he has earned my respect and should he leave, I hope him the best of luck for what he has done for Greenville. Think about this. It wasn't that many years ago that Florida State hired a nobody coach named Bobby Bowden and I guess you know the rest of the story. Go Pirates, Kentucky and the SEC Conference are in for a rude awakening.

Posted by: Jimbo Location: NC on Dec 11, 2008 at 06:55 AM
Great if it true! Now, Skip can we PLEASE focus on the liberty bowl? Scotty, we're loaded for next year. It's going to be better than this year.

Posted by: Mike Location: Syracuse, NY on Dec 11, 2008 at 06:01 AM
At the Notre Dame-Syracuse game, an usher told us Skip had been on campus 3 or 4 times. Any coaching stop between Greenville and South Bend is temporary.

Posted by: BW Location: Wilkes on Dec 11, 2008 at 04:51 AM
Help us build it Skip, everything else will come

Posted by: Robert Location: Greenville on Dec 11, 2008 at 01:24 AM
Now the ACC can start to worry!! There's a beast in the East growling in their own backyard!!! We at ECU love to be different!!! We are ourselves!!

Posted by: Scotty on Dec 11, 2008 at 12:43 AM
He turned down all of that money to stay in Greenville? What a mistake. Skip should have left now because nobody is going to want him after next season once ECU has a terrible year.
