ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) -- East Carolina placekicker Ben Hartman drilled a 39-yard field goal in overtime to lift the Pirates to a 13-10 win over the University of Central Florida.

The Pirates improved to 5-3 this season, 3-1 in Conference USA play. UCF dropped to 2-6, 1-3.

Hartmans game-winner, the third of his career, followed an interception by Pirates freshman cornerback Emanuel Davis on the first play of overtime. Davis stepped in front of a pass by UCF quarterback Michael Greco, giving the Pirates an opportunity to finish off a rally that started in the final minutes of regulation.

ECU tailback Norman Whitley, who rushed for 135 yards in the game, scored from two yards out with 1:51 left in regulation to tie the game at 10-10.

That started a wild run to the finish with both teams turning the ball over once, but neither could convert.

Greco, who was just 9-of-21 for 142 yards passing, fumbled at the UCF 46 with 33 seconds left. Davis recovered for ECU.

However, Pirates quarterback Rob Kass was intercepted on the next play by Johnell Neal. The Knights ran out the clock to play for overtime.

UCFs defense dominated the game for the first three and a half quarters, but couldnt finish.

The Knights led 10-0 at halftime after a 54-yard scoring pass from Greco to Jamar Newsome and a 49-yard field goal by Daren Daly.

The Knights defense, meanwhile, was manhandling ECUs offense. The Pirates had only 89 yards total offense and converted just one of eight third-down opportunities. Hartman tried to salvage something for ECUs offense, but missed on attempts from 48 and 46 yards.

ECUs defense took over in the third period, limiting UCF to one first down and just seven yards in the quarter. Hartman finally connected, nailing a 27-yard field goal to cut the Pirates deficit to 10-3.

Pirate Lady you are definitely one of the good ones! : )

TPL, Mr. T and Dave: TPL glad to see you are back. Dave is a big boy you could have been rougher on him, no big deal! Mr. T. I don't know what to say about a lot of issues. BTW congratulations on your Pirates consecutive victories. Back to posting here I can take anything thrown at me. This blog moderation is NOT consistent. As long as subjects and comments are expressed without profanity and deliberate targeting of issues I just don't see justified the iron clad of the moderators sometimes. This leads me to believe that some are more flexible than others. If we have one assigned to sports more or less permanently we would not have this problem. It is evident that we have maintained our adult and mature approach to the point The Pirate Lady is comfortable expressing her views and her CFB knowledge. Like I said we are adults therefore WHY are we treated with so much censorship? It will be interesting if this post makes it. Thank you

Dave, sweetie, I won't flog you about PSU. I've posted on other articles already how I was disappointed in their loss. I'm just hoping some of my ECU hospitality is rubbing off on you, lol.

Posted by: Dave Location: Greenville on Nov 8, 2008 at 08:06 PM
WELL go ahead and flog me about PSU losing to Iowa. Oh well, the ROSE BOWL is still in hand as long as they win their last two games.

And should my last post make it......I would also like to say I can dish it out and I can take it. It also pains me to know that Dave and I are in agreement on several things. I enjoy, and look forward, to seeing dave and deadfish. They are my two favorite sparring partners. I don't agree with the posting approval either. I get stuff through that is way more controversial that some of the things that don't make it. I believe that if witn banned dave this site wouldn't be what it is. Let dave's stuff in he's livin' here cuz his wife told him to so he's not as big and bad as he makes himself out to be. This is probably the only place he can speak his true opinion without being "grounded" by his wife. You go Mrs. Dave! (Im not in the same boat, but ....might be standing on the pier!)

Posted by: Big T Location: greenville on Nov 8, 2008 at 05:10 PM
I am in the same boat you are in, most of what I post doesn't pass the moderators criteria either. But I don't whine when someone insults me either. However, if i was in the middle of Penn State territory blogging about how much of a sissy schedule PSU has and that is the only reason they have the record they do. That in reality they couldn't beat their way out of a wet paper sack and if anyone pulls for them they are all idiots....I would EXPECT to get hammered. Your problem is you do just that in ECU territory and whine if someone says anything about you. I say you mess with a bull, you just might get the horns. (btw, i do think psu has sissy schedule, easiest in all CF, but I do hope when they falsly land in one of the bowls that can result in CFNC I do hope they win.) If you don't want ECU fans calling you a schmuck......then don't insult their team and them personally for pulling for ecu. Both things you have done. If you can't take it, don't dish it out. Do you concur?

Dave: The key word is smell... Sending long stem red roses might work...

Big T 60% of my posts DON'T get posted on here and they are much TAMER than the ones that are posted about me!

Posted by: Big T Location: greenville on Nov 6, 2008 at 02:11 PM
Dave, I just saw where you .......whined...about WITN breaking its posting rules. As much crap as you have spun out about people on this site you should be the last, if not myself, to complain about what someone says about you. You have earned, as have i any comment that we receive. That is why we choose to participate. Don't call someone a putz unless you're willing to be called a dufus. I invited John Q Public to criticize me by participating in the public banter. Moderator: I didn't see Bill's comment but would like to. Unless he threatened to "whip dave's @$$" its all fair game. Whoops, thats allowed too though. Remember Dave and Rob I think it was. If Dave can't take it he needs to not dish it out. You know, stay out of the sandbox if he can't play fair. To remove a comment because Dave was insulted is a joke! I am very disappointed

Posted by: Big T Location: greenville on Nov 5, 2008 at 04:25 PM
Yes deadfish and Dave I have had multiple posts not approved myself. I enjoy the...discussions. Some folks can't take it. Some can dish it out but their skin is just a bit thin. And as far as the moderator goes I think there may be an agenda there. Keep it coming, I am the one who chose to open myself up for criticism 'bout expressing my opinion on the various subjects. That is the purpose of a blog. I guess Dubya might put it this way; Its non'confrontational confrontation. If you are can't handle confrontation and passionately opinionated people, just read the headlines, check out the radar, log off, and go to wal-mart or something. Sometimes this means the moderator too. Touche'!

I could care less what ECU does the rest of the year. Tulsa will win CUSA and Penn State is going to play USC in the Rose Bowl. ECU will play some team like Buffalo in the Denny's Bowl and we all will be happy in the end!

Posted by: Barry Location: Greenville on Nov 5, 2008 at 09:07 AM
deadfish: hyperbolic comment & exaggeration do not serve your counterpoint well. You are either slipping or I overrated your reasoning ability. Now, go ahead Dave, make the obvious comment about "overrated"; picking the proverbial fresh fruit left on the tree appears to be the totality & extent of your abilities and would further serve to hammer the point home.

Posted by: deadfish Location: nc on Nov 5, 2008 at 07:25 AM
Wow, ECU students are the most well behaved perfect children in the USA... Sure???????????

Posted by: Barry Location: Greenville on Nov 4, 2008 at 09:51 PM
deadfish: here I have to pull myself away from the ELizabeth Dole just got toasted party to contradict myself and enter into gradation territory. deadfish, my friend, let's make one obvious, indisputable thing absolutely clear- the ECU game had ended, the TT game had not. Obviously, "order was RESTORED QUICKLY"- they had to finish the dang game my man! Wow. I know that you a modicum of football, so I know that you knew that the fans knew (whew!)that they risked serious penalty repurcussions. Now I gotta go back to my ex- Senator Dole party. By the way, why in gracious are you still backing ADA Dave? Jeesh. A little distance.

Posted by: deadfish Location: nc on Nov 4, 2008 at 07:06 PM
Mr. Barry: Sir, I watched the UT VS TT game. Yes, the TT fans invaded the playing field. Order was [QUICKLY RESTORED] and the game QUICKLY resumed. Police brutality or not the ECU fans, media and the community can NOT say the same. The point here is [order restoration], thank you. Politely I leave it at that. Thank you PS: I was rooting for TT!

Posted by: deadfish Location: nc on Nov 4, 2008 at 06:50 PM
WITN Moderator: I agree with Dave. You have broken your own rules and perhaps biased. I had three posts that were either ignored or deleted. A lot of posts are posted with either inflammatory subjects, name calling along with racial and political tones and they have been posted. Few of those have been edited if at all. BTW my posts followed your precious rules. Do you care to explain? Thank you

Dave. I am truly sorry for attacking you. Post on, Champion of all things anti-ecu!!

Posted by: Barry Location: Greenville on Nov 4, 2008 at 05:44 PM
Hi Dave and deadfish. I missed you two boys! Dave: The Persecuted Troll. The Americans with Disabilities Act should make persecuted message board trolls a protected class, indeed. Dave, I'll start lobbying ADA on your behalf. deadfish: your self-described "BIG DIFFERENCE" seems like nuanced hair-splitting, really. I saw the TT game and witnessed them rush the field at least a couple of times (I was pulling for TT, and this was a huge win and the kids were celebrating. I don't have an issue with it. Rather akin to the celebration on the field in Greenville after the big WVU win, sans the beat down). I really don't want to engage in an exchange about gradation, so I'll leave it at that. Dave is working to his potential here; you on the other hand, can do far better.

Posted by: Dave Location: Greenville on Nov 4, 2008 at 02:24 PM
To the WITN Mods THANKS! I have no problem when people attack me but when I attack them it usually doesn't get posted. I just want an even and fair playing field.

Posted by: WITN Moderator Location: WITN on Nov 4, 2008 at 02:11 PM
Dave: I assume you have an issue with the post from Bill in Greenville. We've deleted that one. We try to post as much as we can and sometimes something will get by that shouldn't. Please bring any offensive comments to our attention so we can review them.

Posted by: Dave Location: Greenville on Nov 4, 2008 at 02:03 PM
I love how the WITN editors CONSTANTLY break their own rules when it comes to posts about me. WITN if you have set ground rules for this website PLEASE stick to them!

A win is a win ugly or with domination. There is no doubt ECU has lost some key players due to those players poor decisions. However, ECU has come thru these struggles and is tied for 1st place in the CUSA East division. Despite a not so great showing this Sunday, we came out with a win. Bottom line. Way to go Pirates. Beat Marshall!

Posted by: deadfish Location: nc on Nov 3, 2008 at 08:38 PM
kk1088: Do you know how many sides a coin have? The last time I checked it has two. The point is you described only one side. Side number two is described as [quick order restoration]. Did you see TT fans challenging the field authorities and refusing to obey orders? Can you say the same thing about your darling rowdy ECU students? That is called A BIG DIFFERENCE... One more thing don't insult the readers intelligence with your angelical sanctimonious cheap rhetoric. You might get some sympathy at the ECU campus but not on this blog and certainly not from me...

DThom They can treat illnesses, but not a struggling football program.

Posted by: porkchop Location: Gville on Nov 3, 2008 at 06:32 PM
The very definition of an ugly win. The game was a a dog. ECU seems to play up or down to the level of their opponent, and lately it's been down. A win is a win, but this doesn't say much good about this football team.

Posted by: DThom Location: GLand on Nov 3, 2008 at 04:22 PM
JW, there are doctors that can treat your illness.

Posted by: NS Location: Farmville on Nov 3, 2008 at 12:43 PM
I agree with John in Ayden. What kind of logic is there to putting Kass in, while Pinkney orchestrated the scoring drive that tied the game up. That made no since. I would like to here the reasoning behind that decision. It did look they were trying to let Kass show off for the home town crowd. I guess a win is a win. It may be an ugly baby, but its our baby!

Posted by: JW Location: Greenville on Nov 3, 2008 at 12:17 PM
The defense played good against a horrible team...here's to another dissapointing season.

Posted by: Dave Location: Greenville on Nov 3, 2008 at 11:15 AM
That game was a SNOOZER!! By the way DK I will always be an ECU hater and will never stuff it!

Posted by: John Location: Ayden on Nov 3, 2008 at 11:08 AM
I would also like to add, that, for the most part, the defense turned in a stellar performance. Kudos to those guys!

Posted by: John Location: Ayden on Nov 3, 2008 at 11:05 AM
If the coaches would have put Pinkney in earlier, then maybe they would have played more of the game the way the did in the last quarter-and-a-half. Why does it matter if you can throw the ball 70 yards or 80 mph (like Kass) if you can't hit the target? On top of that, he is not nimble or quick enough to get away from incoming defenders that capable QB's can evade most of the time. I don't know what the coaching staff was thinking holding Pinkney out as long as they did. Then, he leads them to a touchdown, they put Kass back in, and he throws an interception. What's the reasoning? Did Kass whine that he wanted more PT in front of his hometown family and friends? I hope they come to their senses by starting Pinkney this weekend.

Posted by: woohoo Location: Pirate Country on Nov 3, 2008 at 11:03 AM
Good Job boys!! Lets keep it goin for next weekend. Hopefully we will get to see the Pinkney get the ball back.

Posted by: GoPirates Location: GVegas on Nov 3, 2008 at 10:11 AM
Uhh we barley pulled that one off, if they had played the entire game like they did in the 4th quarter, then we might have had it in the bag..but hey we won!!! Keep it up Pirates!!!!

Posted by: kkl088 Location: Gvegas on Nov 3, 2008 at 10:02 AM
Im just wondering how come ECU can storm the field and we get fined & have a big ordeal come up and all the "haters" talk about "drunk students" etc etc etc, and when Texas Tech storms the field and pulls the goal posts down & has triple the students on the field- nothing is said!

Posted by: DK Location: Greenville on Nov 3, 2008 at 08:43 AM
Good job Pirates! Another W! All the haters can stuff it.

Posted by: Anonymous Location: Greenville on Nov 3, 2008 at 08:31 AM
Whew! Pulled that one out of our butt.
