GREENVILLE, N.C. (AP) -- Case Keenum threw for 399 yards and
three touchdowns, and Houston earned its first win against a ranked
opponent in a dozen years by beating No. 23 East Carolina 41-24 on
Saturday.
Patrick Edwards had 11 catches for 146 yards and a touchdown for
the Cougars (2-3, 1-0 Conference USA), who had no trouble moving
the ball and finished with 621 total yards. Bryce Beall ran for 132
yards and two scores, while Houston's defense didn't allow the
Pirates to score an offensive touchdown until midway through the
third quarter.
Houston had lost 18 straight games against ranked opponents
since a 56-49 overtime win against then-No. 20 Southern Mississippi
in November 1996.

Frame it you got one on me. I wonder what the NCAA thinks about him making money doing a commercial wearing an ECU jersey. It looks unethical to me. You don't see USC coach Pete Carroll doing a commercial while wearing an USC jersey. Thank you

Dave your posts are funny keep up the good work.

Posted by: sassyecu Location: greenville on Oct 1, 2008 at 02:14 PM
dave honestly giving one or two comments ok, give more than three that is crazy! Instead of making it your life's mission to hate ECU how about getting a job or at least doing your job instead of writting trash about ECU. GO PIRATES!!!!

Dave: If all you can do is ridicule the South and even go as far as picking on a kid's accent, then why ARE you down here?

Posted by: Dave Location: Greenville on Oct 1, 2008 at 10:18 AM
deadfish when I see that mattress commercial I get a good laugh when that one kids calls Greenville Greenvolle and when Skip is pointing to the Kids sign at the end.

Posted by: John Location: Greenville on Oct 1, 2008 at 08:25 AM
deadfish: you are mistaken. Yes, Coach Holtz has done a commercial for the mattress store, but the boys aren't his sons. If you listen closely at the beginning of the ad you will hear Holtz say that he is there with the Hill boys; as in David Hill - the gentleman who owns the mattress store along with the entire strip shopping center that his store is located in. I'm a former ECU student, but at least I know how to listen. Not bad for a 206 ranking, huh?

Dave: Where are you from? If from Pa., where? Anyone that has ever spent time in Pa. knows full well that the vast expanse of land between Philly and Pitts. is about the redneckiest (if I may) place in all of America. Ever drive route 15? Heehaw! Now, I have nothing against rural areas, or rednecks. I know many, call many friends, and have some redneckedness myself. Here is the difference: folks around here know the rural traditions and embrace it as part of their heritage. The Pa 'necks do not have a clue that they are HUGE 'necks and lambast others for being so. They have no self insight whatsoever, then move south as the rust belt crumbles, and through ignorance and poor self esteem, claim superiority. The irony is all too rich as they pursue education and money in an area they claim is inferior. The cities in Pa.= (I am stooping to stereotypes here like Dave) = filled with blue collar, undereducated, racist ethnics. You ain't seen segregation till you've seen Pa. Look in mirror Dave

Posted by: Dave Location: Greenville on Sep 30, 2008 at 09:27 PM
NO I don't like grits, country music, barbecue, or any other "Southern" tradition. The word Yankee is a compliment to me! It's better than being a Southern hill billy redneck!

Dave? David Silver? PSU grad?? You should get back to work!!!! ARRRRRRRRRGGHHHHHHH

Posted by: deadfish Location: nc on Sep 30, 2008 at 05:01 PM
"loosing and ligitimate" Joey and Keith respectively I call that nauseating spelling. There isn't any excuse for that. How about losing and legitimate? This site is well monitored meaning that more than likely some of your own children read what is posted. The point is how can you tell your own children do your homework when your spelling stinks? Please? Secondly some of you are making excuses for the poor recruiting. If the coach is going to be paid high bucks then recruit like one...

Posted by: John Location: Greenville on Sep 30, 2008 at 01:17 PM
Dave: Again, we didn't lose to PSU - we lost to Houston. So, why do you think you have a claim to stake? So, you don't like "ECU forced down (your) throat". You probably don't like country music, Robert E. Lee, or grits either. You sound like a STEREO-typical Yankee, so if you're so unhappy take yourself back across the Mason-Dixon line. And, by the way, I do root for the ECU basketball team except if/when they play UNC. My dad has been a life-long Tarheel basketball fan, and I inherited that from him. But, if ANYONE else is playing against the Pirates I will definitely be sporting the purple and gold.

Posted by: Barry Location: Greenville on Sep 30, 2008 at 01:05 PM
Good question Kim. It was Dave and his ECU bitterness taking another shot at the school and using basketball as fodder.

Posted by: Keith Location: Greenville on Sep 30, 2008 at 12:52 PM
fmrecpirate: You are absolutely correct with your post. There is no ligitimate recruit, that will make a commitment with the Pirates knowing that the best he could play for is the Conference USA championship. The Pirates do get good players, but most of them come to schools like ECU because they do not qualify academicly for the other big BCS schools. As long as we are associated with a non-BCS conference we will not get the big time players that the other schools get, thus we are stuck with what we can get our hands on. These kids want to play for a big time program and not the hopes for a Liberty Bowl game. Like it or not, it is what it is.

Posted by: Kim Location: Greenville on Sep 30, 2008 at 11:50 AM
I thought this was a Football related topic???????? How did basketball get involved here.

Posted by: Barry Location: Greenville on Sep 30, 2008 at 10:59 AM
Dave: Really? Tell me about the historical power of PSU basketball. They have all the money advantages, play in the Big 10 and still are nothing to write home about. I have seen you claim on here before that you are PSU alum., not that you need to prove anything to me, but I find that questionable. Most PSU alums I know have more couth than you display. Are you PSU- State College alum, or one of the many PSU branch campuses? Or, maybe not alum, and really a transplanted Pa. 'neck with an attitude toward the south, from say the 717 or 814 area code? Yes, I know the type, trust me on this one.

Re: recruiting I played here in the early 80's and back then the draw to come here rather than some other big school was the schedule. We played Miami, Penn St., LSU, Fla, Fla St.,Auburn and South Carolina when they all were giants in the game. Now you are going to lose the good recruits because of the conference. We now have a facility that can match many across the nation however how do you recruit a kid and tell him that the team goal is to win conference USA and play the 'Memphis Bowl'. Tough sell! We will always lose recruits to our ACC neigbhors as long as we are part of the non-bcs Con USA.

Posted by: Dave Location: Greenville on Sep 30, 2008 at 09:08 AM
Barry, PSU would wax ECU in basketball. Therefore, your argument is WEAK.

Posted by: Keith Location: Greenville on Sep 30, 2008 at 08:46 AM
Just as Dan posted, Our season is far from over. "IF" we can go out and beat Virginia, we will still have great exposure. That would put us beating 2 ACC teams this year. I know, I know, that Virginia tech is pretty weak this year and Virginia probably has the worst team in their history, but that does not matter on paper, Paper would show defeating 2 ACC schools which are supposed to be way better than us. If we just play well in our Conference, a good bowl game is still very likely. Although after looking at the Houston game, we still may have a lot of work to do. Keep ours heads high and GO PIRATES!!!

Posted by: DK Location: Greenville on Sep 30, 2008 at 08:34 AM
ECU is forced down your throat and we're the ones that suck? I know this wont be published, but I just couldnt start my day without saying this. Mr. Editor, you should start up a site with nothing but deleted comments. Thats one I would spend most of my day on.

Dave, if you are so tired of ECU being shoved down your throat then why do you troll this site looking to pick cyber fights with Pirate fans? If ECU really bothers you so much then why submerge yourself in these forums? What's your real agenda?

Posted by: Barry Location: Greenville on Sep 29, 2008 at 11:10 PM
Dave: Best wishes in not being inundated with ECU in a town of 60,000, not including the 27,000 students. You do the math. By the way, the Pirate faithful are hoping beyond hope during basketball season that one day we may aspire to the great basketball glory that is Penn State basketball.

Posted by: deadfish Location: nc on Sep 29, 2008 at 09:43 PM
The Pirate Lady: Please tell your fellow fans on this thread what we discussed regarding recruiting. The only way ECU is going to improve is by recruiting better HS prospects right on their own backyard, IE. Donte Moss from Jacksonville, NC who committed to UNC. You'll be glad to hear that Mr. Moss is the #12 player rated in the nation according to rivals.com Like The Pirate Lady said making noise is NOT the right way of doing things. Ask Mr. Holtz if there was any contact with Mr. Moss. Press him to recruit better which is part of his job. If ECU keeps letting top prospects signed by somebody else ECU will remain the same year after year. I tell you a secret ECU fans attend Mr. Holtz press conferences and drill him hard with tough questions even if you get a politically correct answer... Good luck Pirate fans!

Posted by: Dave Location: Greenville on Sep 29, 2008 at 07:22 PM
John, I live in Greenville and am tired of having ECU forced down my throat. And don't give me that well leave if you don't like it spill. In time that will happen; for now I am here. By the way, where are all of you Pirate faithful when basketball season rolls around?

Posted by: The Pirate Lady Location: Grimesland on Sep 29, 2008 at 03:49 PM
Danny: I think that's evident (that some Pirate fans don't know what's going on) when fans started leaving before the game was even over. These are the same people, as Deb mentioned, that talked so much hype about ECU being a BCS buster and blah blah blah...they're making us look like idiots. Loyal Pirate fans know that we still have a long way to go before we even make it THAT far. We are making strides every year, but beating VT and WVU does not make us a BCS contender. We need to stop thinking about the BCS, the AP, USA today polls, whatever and start thinking about winning conference championships. Then worry about everything else.

Posted by: Barry Location: Greenville on Sep 29, 2008 at 02:18 PM
Well said John.

Posted by: John Location: Greenville on Sep 29, 2008 at 01:09 PM
A lot of you simply need to grow up and get a life. If you're a PSU or USC fan, why do you even concern yourself with the status of ECU? We'll probably never play you, and we're not even in the same state. If you wish to continue to root for your teams while you live in our state, I think that's great. You should still support your team although you're miles away, but don't drag ECU into the fight only because it's the local team and it's convenient to criticize them. I also pull for Ohio St. because my mom and grandmother were both born and raised outside of Columbus, OH, but you won't see me going on line to ridicule Wolverine fans after a loss. So, again, grow up, get a life, and keep your noses from where they don't belong.

Owwwwwwww! That hurt. Anyhow, Go Pirates!

Posted by: Danny Location: Greenville,NC on Sep 29, 2008 at 10:50 AM
Well, I just think a large majoity of the Pirate fan base has no idea what is going on. I have been a loyal Pirate for 30 years. I pull for them hard, and just enjoy watching them play and win of course. Right hear at home and something I enjoy to do. Most don't get the picture that ECU will never have much of a chance to be "bigtime". Just the way it is. Only way possible to get a BCS bid is to go undefeated and have help from the other Non-BCS schools to lose games. The best we can hope for is a Conference Championship and get to go to sub-par bowls. We will have a good team every 6-7 years or so, then back to the same old for a while. Just sit back pull for your team and enjoy watching them in our home town win or lose!!! No need for all the trash talk when they win.

Posted by: Deb Location: Greenville on Sep 29, 2008 at 10:34 AM
We need to get our fans to settle down and take one game at a time. It makes it worse when all the hype and talk is so big. That is where we get the term "Bigheaded" every time we win a game. I hate to hear all this big talk before the games are played, and look at where we are right now, a lot of fans are eating words.

Posted by: Dan Location: Greenville on Sep 29, 2008 at 10:31 AM
Come guys, the season is not over. We are off a week and then have the worst team in the ACC next on the schedule. Now, if we somehow/someway lose to Virginia, we are in big trouble, even Duke blew them out this past weekend.

Posted by: GoPirates Location: GVegas on Sep 29, 2008 at 10:29 AM
Although upset, I still believe in the Pirates!! Lets hope these past two losses put their heads back in the right place and we will pull out some more wins!!! Ive got faith guys....GO PIRATES

Posted by: Adam Location: Greenville on Sep 29, 2008 at 10:25 AM
Well... we can look on the bright side about our coach!! If he had a great season with the Pirates he was surely to be gone to another school. If they lose a couple more, he is surely to stay put in Greenville. No one will want him

Posted by: Jackson Location: Kinston on Sep 29, 2008 at 06:28 AM
Maybe we should give coach another 5 million and we end up like Logan and Thompson. Paying for coaches that are sitting at home. When they win a conference championship they get paid. We will never go to another conference unless we win the mediocre conference we're in.

Posted by: smb=pirate girl Location: Grimesland aka Pirate Nation on Sep 28, 2008 at 08:21 PM
Thank you Dave, that's all we ask is that you understand the difference between loyal Pirate fans, and those living in a sub-reality aka bandwagoners. We know we could never beat Alabama, but we'd take a shot at 'em nonetheless, lol. Nothing wrong with trying.

Posted by: deadfish Location: nc on Sep 28, 2008 at 06:57 PM
Native Pirate: "Romantic" clintonian rhetoric as expected, what else is new? Some of us can talk the talk and walk the walk. I backed-up my argument(s) with facts not with some cheap blah-blah. BTW I do my homework and my findings speak for themselves. I also would have said too much to list or too hard to find instead of the incorrect "to much to list and to hard to find". The grammatical errors do not help your questionable credibility. Thank you

Posted by: Dave Location: Greenville on Sep 28, 2008 at 06:32 PM
Even though some of my posts are brutal there ARE some very good ECU fans. Heck, I have a lot of friends who pull for ECU. The only thing that I don't like are the unrealistic fans who think ECU could beat Alabama. Most of the older fans are classy while any ECU fan under the age of 23 needs to take a class in Realism 101.

Posted by: NativePirate on Sep 28, 2008 at 05:08 PM
hey deadfish, that was spoken just like a good tarheel fan would put it. There's to much to list for a "rebuttal", but if you do your homework, it shouldn't be to hard to find.

Posted by: deadfish Location: nc on Sep 28, 2008 at 04:14 PM
Native Pirate: I hate to sound like a broken record but I have a solid argument regarding recruiting since I visit rivals.com frequently. According to rivals.com ECU is #70 while Duke is #32 regarding the 2009 class. Secondly UNC got the commitment from a Jacksonville four star DE. Thirdly another top HS prospect from Ahoskie went to Notre Dame about a year or two ago. Therefore Chris is right. I'll be glad to listen your rebuttal if it is loaded with facts NOT "romantic" rhetoric. What does "had of been" mean? Is that a new grammatical expression? Did you attend ECU? The polls are out both USA Today/coaches poll as well as AP's. Check ESPN and USA Today sites. Another problem that affects ECU recruiting is its academic standing which is #206 in the nation per: http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/college/national-counselor-rank Do you want your athletically gifted son to attend ECU when offered a better scholarship if he's able to handle a tougher academic school? UHM?

Posted by: Barry Location: Greenville on Sep 28, 2008 at 03:32 PM
Dave: lol, touche! That was a decent come back response. Although I am a Pirate through and through, I usually pull for PSU in B10/11 games.

Posted by: Brad Location: Greenville on Sep 28, 2008 at 03:24 PM
Dave, Its obvious you're the only one on this board with issues. Reading your posts, Barry's assesment of you sounds accurate.

Posted by: Observer Location: Eastern NC on Sep 28, 2008 at 03:17 PM
How long will it be before the Pirates give their misbehaved fans another chance at anarchy? Will they have another chance to rush onto the field this year and get 'billy clubbed?'

Posted by: Dave Location: Greenville on Sep 28, 2008 at 12:32 PM
Barry, you have anger issues. Calm down, it's only a football game.

Posted by: NativePirate Location: Greenville on Sep 28, 2008 at 12:29 PM
To the EDITOR......Barry was gentle in comparison to what I would have to say to "Dave". But Barry's comments were spot on. To Chris, you evidently don't know the history of ECU when you make comments about our recruiting. If ECU had of been on a more level playing field all these years, I doubt we would have as much of a problem recruiting. On a side note, if the ACC was just now starting a conference I'll bet you the teams from NC would be different as well.

Editor: Point taken. Just trying to keep it civil.

Posted by: Big T Location: greenville on Sep 28, 2008 at 12:12 PM
I have never had delusions about BCS bowl for ECU. Three years ago a bowl "appearance" would suffice. Then a bowl win, which we achieved against a ranked opponent. Now we need to up the "bowl chain". I had no delusion about an undefeated season. CUSA is notorious for run and gun and huge offensive performances. Much of that is a result of less than stellar defensive performances. Many teams, ECU included, in my opinion, have good defensive players, yet what they lack is depth. A single player injury can not only hurt the morale of a defense but its performance with a lack of depth. Case in point; Quenton Cotton, the anchor of ECU defense. When you lose your anchor, (and you lack...POWER), you just float around aimlessly, at the whim of what ever force is in front of you. If you lack secondary speed and are unable to drop the QB on his arse, he'll get 399 yard against you. I am optimistic and positive we are on the way up, but unlike others, I know we have a way to go.

Hello Dave and deadfish, I have arrived to take my medicine. (Penn State looked good yesterday) I am not sure what happened, I can't get an answer. The choking has spilled over into today. I was disappointed about NCSU but I am mad about Houston. I rode by on Charles and saw better practices than they played. And Houston tried their best to hand us the game with mistakes. But if they make 4 and we make 8 thats a 2 to 1 ratio. Hmmmmm, thats close to what the score was right? 2 to 1 ratio? I hope we use this off week to get our doo-doo together. I love another purple and gold team that always seems to have just a mediocre quarterback, at least since Fran Tarkington. The difference between the Vikes and Pirates is; Pirates have a good coach with a new deal. I just hope Notre Dame isn't willing to pay the 100 grand to get him out of it. We are heading in the right direction, just not quite there yet. Don't think USC will drop below 10, Beavers have always done well against them.

Posted by: Barry Location: Greenville on Sep 28, 2008 at 12:03 PM
Dave: Do you dislike ECU more than you like PSU? Your postings suggest so. When PSU loses a couple of conference games, will you be here? I suspect you will, and your modus operandi will be "at least we are better than sorry ECU". You are predictable and a broken record. Obsessed with negating all things ECU. Quite an online life, built on denouncing the local economic engine. Why the bitterness, really? Do you want to be somewhere else? Or do you have self-esteem issues that manifest in your bloggings? ECU lost and will win & lose again, but most Pirate fans will remain loyal. Your personality issues will remain for life too, but without much hope for repair.

Editor's Note: This one is "on the line". I did not edit but let's be nice.

I never bought into the media hype about ECU going to the BCS or that we were going to be a nationally ranked team this year. Yeah, our wins against VT and WVU were great, but our main focus, as I believe Skip and crew have said all along, should be to win our conference. True fans of ECU couldn't care less about the BCS, and none of us said we were going to make it that far. The media and people that hate ECU talked up that hype and tried to put us down. Maybe this loss is just what the Pirates need to wake themselves up and do some serious evaluating of the program during this bye week. But there is a silver lining in all of this; NC State lost, and UNC though they inked out the win against Miami, probably won't win any more games on their schedule and if they do, they still won't be ranked! If Tate gets hurt, you guys are screwed!

Posted by: Chris Location: Greenville on Sep 28, 2008 at 10:56 AM
Hey DK, I have lived here all my life, so I am not a "podunk import". I just have the sense to realize ECU football is mediocre and so so year after year. I just can't stand everybody in Greenville speaking so highly of the up and down Pirates. They do not have enough recruitment power to maintain a powerhouse team that deserves to be in the AP top 25.

Posted by: DK Location: Greenville on Sep 28, 2008 at 08:57 AM
Who cares about the top 25 and USC. We are in Greenville, NC not in California where all the money is. I do not expect for ECU to be ranked among the best in the country. I dont care what their rank is. I enjoy watching them play. Im not some bandwagon fan that pulls for winning teams. I pull for the teams that I love regardless of their record. They could be the worse team in the country and I would pull for them just as hard. The people that come up here to hate on ECU in our own home town are just some podunk imports that hate on ECU just to get a rise out of us fans. We dont care what you say. We are Pirates and always will be no matter what you say.

Figures as much. I called the loss. This stuff happens every year the Pirates get ranked. Big heads prevail, they lose, and ultimately return to mediocrity. Its sad too. The same pattern develops everytime. Maybe the Pirates can salvage a winning season, but even that is in major jeopardy now. Can you say OVERRATED?

T. Holland said today the contract for Skip Holtz was agreed upon last year but just made its way through the state process of approval. Seems like the top 25 has always been a curse for the Pirates. 2 losses back to back. Oh my, here we go again. Does anyone know how many coaches we are still paying? I say we as an alumni of the university, I get sick of the university calling and writing me for donations and endowment money. I'm still paying for my time i was fortunate enough to spend at ECU. Like all government, there is a lot of money thrown away at ECU. I am still loyal to the team and hope for wins but i can see why our rivals call us overconfident. I don't think it is as much the team as the entire program has portrayed itself that way. The stadium is sold out but we have seen before as we start to go into losing cycle naturally crowds thin. Fans start leaving the game earlier. Pinkney has been off the last 2 games. Maybe the skipper can get the ship back on course.

DK: History! Finito la musica pasato la festa! In Italian it means the music stopped playing the party is OVER! USC will be ranked 10-13; ECU lost the party invitation(top 25)! USC will be going to the Rose Bowl; ECU will be lucky if they go to a ding-dong bowl! Recruit a decent QB. Ask Mitch Mustain to transfer to your school. He's #4 on USC QB depth chart and USC fans don't like him... He's from Arkansas...

Where are all the Trojan fans today? How did your #1 team get beat by an unranked team? Anyway. We got beat today. It happens from time to time. So you Pirate haters that come up here to talk junk dont have any effect on how hard I pull for my team. Its called loyalty, and when they lose, it just makes me pull harder for them. If you are a Greenville native and pull against the Pirates, thats a shame. If you are an import and are not a native. Pull against the Pirates all you want. We dont care about you.

They need to blame the loss on their teams OVERCONFIDENCE and LACK OF FOCUS!
