ECU Beats Tulane Save Email Print

Patrick Pinkney threw a 24-yard touchdown pass to Jamar Bryant with 1:41 left to play, and No. 14 East Carolina rallied for a 28-24 victory against Tulane on Saturday.

The Pirates (3-0, 1-0 Conference USA) vaulted into the national rankings and national spotlight by upsetting Virginia Tech and West Virginia in consecutive weeks, and barely escaped having Tulane (1-2)pull the same trick on them.

Pinkney completed 22-of-32 passes for 260 yards and two touchdowns, and the Pirates improved to 3-0 for the first time since 1999. ECU secured the victory when Pierre Bell intercepted
Kevin Moore's pass at the Green Wave 45 with 28 seconds left.

Mr. Bob: USC kicks OSU "derrière" and you call it a collapse. Should I asses your CFB knowledge based on that statement? BTW I did NOT attend USC. I have been a big Trojan fan just before OJS. I'm curious did you watch the WVA VS CU game? I also agree with "Anti Pirates". ECU does NOT belong with the Big Boys. BTW based on ECU's early success this season some ECU fans whose hopes are too big for their britches unrealistically calling for ECU to move to a bigger conference. Where are they going to get the talent to compete? I'll answer that question indirectly! According to rivals.com CFB recruiting rankings Duke is rated #32, ECU #70. You can easily infer from that that ECU will have a tough time beating Duke in two to three years if they were to play each other. By the same token don't be surprised if it doesn't happen the other way around! Dave: If ECU beats NC ST by three points they will drop another four spots!

After the NC State Wolf Pack beat up the Pirates this Saturday, ECU will fade away out of the Top 25 faster than a fart in a hurricane.

Posted by: Bob Location: Winterville on Sep 16, 2008 at 11:28 PM
Anti Pirates: Given your comments about WVa., Va Tech, and alas ECU, not being among "the BIG BOYS (your use of capitalization here speaks volumes- literally and figuratively) of college football; with bated breath we await your definition of a "BIG BOY". Cue the LSU, USC response, which I'll accept. But, please do not state some Big 10 all bark, no bite team in wake of THE (a nod to your affection for capitalization) Ohio State University's annual collapse this weekend. Secondly, tell me please your assocation with this school- are you alum. or bandwagoneer that just likes to tweak the locals with chest-thumping quasi-backing of annual powerhouse? Lemme guess, you also like the Patriots (damn those Giants!), the Yankees, and the Harlem Globetrotters?

Sammy: You are one of the few ECU fans that I agree with nearly 100%, with ALL due respect no sarcasm intended. It is widely reported that Tyronne Willingham's job is on the hot seat(University of Washington). Of course this is a Pac-10 job. Let's assume that Mr. TW is fired which would NOT surprise anyone will Mr. S. Holtz be interested if offered? Hey NOT a bad question even if I ask it myself! I would take that job in a heartbeat, WHY? The salary definitely much higher than at ECU. A much larger and talent richer area to recruit from. Finally it is the Pac-10 which could bolt him either to the NFL or to a bigger CFB program. That is the nature of business...

Posted by: DS Location: Greenville on Sep 16, 2008 at 09:02 PM
Skip Holtz would have to be nuts not to take double what he's making now and flee ECU for a BIG TIME program!

Posted by: Anti Pirates Location: Nowhere important on Sep 16, 2008 at 08:35 PM
ECU needs to stay in CUSA with the other college football mid-majors. There is NO WAY ECU could hang with the BIG BOYS of college football. And NO, WVU and VA Tech DO NOT fit in that category!

Posted by: Sammy Location: Greenville on Sep 16, 2008 at 07:45 PM
LOL!!! LOL!!!! New ECU Fan, what world are you living in, thinking someone will stay because of a good heart instead of the $$$$. One of the funniest things I have read in a long time!!!! Skip wants to go to the top, just as any other coach, and the top for ECU is a Conference USA championship... Sorry, that don't cut it!!!! Heck haven't even won one of those yet

Posted by: deadfish Location: nc on Sep 16, 2008 at 04:54 PM
Dwayne from Greenville: Sir, I don't have an identity crisis. Secondly my point regarding ECU moving to another conference is supported by other ECU fans on this thread. As you probably know I am not a Pirate fan. I am a SF Giants, SF 49ers and an USC Trojans/Pac-10 fan. I have been very critical of ECU in a fair and objective way. I also know the proper use of a possessive noun in a sentence such as their instead of there. I write like a well educated person. Thank you

Posted by: Jesse Location: Greenville on Sep 16, 2008 at 04:27 PM
As ugly as it was, we'll take that win against Tulane! Go Pirates!

Posted by: New ECU fan! Location: Bath on Sep 16, 2008 at 03:22 PM
Never paid much attention to college football until we heard C J Wilson was playing. (My husband was his brothers's Midget football coach).I am so pround of these young men! I know that now they are winning, some of you are saying that the coach will leave if they continue on, but if he has a HEART for the school and his players and it's not about $$$, he will stay and make something great for this school. Let's not let some of your negativitiy crush the spirits of the guys on this team. They are trying really hard to make something of their team. GO PIRATES GO !!!!! Besides, all of the other schools started out 0 & 0 too.

Posted by: phillip Location: Mt. Olive on Sep 16, 2008 at 02:08 PM
ecu would in a bigger conference would be like dropping a goldfish in a sharktank. All the other schools scott more effectively (because what they can offer under the table) The big schoold would kill them. and we wont talk about basketball season. that would be a bad joke.

Posted by: Don Location: Greenville on Sep 16, 2008 at 02:02 PM
Well, let's not get too far ahead of ourselves here. First we must prove that we can win a Conference USA Championship before we start wishing and wanting to be in any other big conferences!!!

Posted by: Dwayne Location: Greenville on Sep 16, 2008 at 12:57 PM
Deadfish, sorry about your identity crisis and surreal views. Proud to be a ECU fan and a Conference USA member. No conference is going to want you when you can come in and beat there last year's conference champion. Virginia Tech/West Virginia 2007. Go Pirates!

Posted by: Mike Location: Greenville on Sep 16, 2008 at 09:30 AM
This is exactly why Skip will bolt out of ECU when he gets the chance at a bigger BCS School. There is nothing here to look forward too. Even if they win the Conference USA Championship, no one will care but us Pirates

Posted by: DS Location: Greenville on Sep 16, 2008 at 08:52 AM
ECU will NEVER get into a bigger conference because in order to do so, a school needs a lot of the all mighty dollar!

Posted by: deadfish Location: nc on Sep 16, 2008 at 08:42 AM
Reality, hallucination and hopes too BIG for your britches characterize you ECU fans. Let me elaborate, please. Going to a better conference is out of the question. That is too naive without considering logistics, WHY? North Carolina is NOT a talent rich state like California, Florida or Texas. Remember ECU fans you have to compete with Wake Forest, UNC, NC ST and others. Those ECU fans that are misinformed check sportingnews.com and msn.foxsports.com and you will be delighted to know that ECU's performance is recognized and complimented. The same goes for ESPNU. You can wish ALL you want. Pardon my slang, it ain't happening baby! USA Today poll: http://www.usatoday.com/sports/collegefootball/usatpoll.htm >ECU #17 also: http://www.sportingnews.com/yourturn/viewtopic.php?t=458134 Scott Wolf LA Daily News voted ECU #6: www.insidesocal.com/usc/ Top 25 I hate to bust your bubble ECU fans ALL it takes is a team with a speedy defense to defeat or rattle ECU offense/QB. Undefeated=NO...

Posted by: Dan B Location: Pirate Nation on Sep 15, 2008 at 10:17 PM
Hey, I agree with the need for a better conference. We just do not get and will not get any respect. Just look at this week's rankings. Ranked #14 coming into this weekend, win, and lose spots in the rankings. Not very many teams will win a game and drop in the rankings like we did. Kinda tells us how weak our Conference USA really is. This is why we cannot afford to lose any game. One loss and we will drop like a brick out of the rankings and be forgotten, as the rest of our schedule is so weak!! GET US INTO A BETTER CONFERENCE!!!

Posted by: Tom Location: Greenville on Sep 15, 2008 at 09:52 PM
I also agree with you guys. It's like you can't go but so far no matter how good you are. No matter how good the ECU football does, the very best they will ever get is a Conference USA championship. Have to win that first though! I definitly think we should be in a BCS conference, it's our only chance to get anywhere.

Posted by: Mike Location: Greenville on Sep 15, 2008 at 03:34 PM
I agree with Andy and Jack. Conference USA is very weak. Also every coach has the ultimate goal to compete for a National Title. If Skip has the chance to go to a BCS school he will bolt. There is never a chance for ECU to play for a National Title even if they go undefeated.

Posted by: Andy Location: Greenville on Sep 15, 2008 at 03:29 PM
John.. Do you really think Skip signing a contract really means a lot, just more money for another school to have to come up with in a "buy out". It's just the nature of the beast. If Skip gets on top, he will leave, a down year in the future and he will be forgotten. ECU somehow/some way needs to get into a big time conference!!

Posted by: Me Location: My house on Sep 15, 2008 at 03:05 PM
ECU is NOT going to go undefeated. That kind of talk is FOOLISH in ANY sport!

Posted by: John Location: GREENVILLE on Sep 15, 2008 at 02:32 PM
Why are there so many negative/pessimistic comments towards ECU football on here? This is our home team! Go Pirates! On a side note to Andy - Coach Holtz recently signed a contract to stay with ECU till 2013.

Posted by: Jack Location: Washington on Sep 15, 2008 at 01:05 PM
It is a shame that our conference is so weak. ECU should have a great shot at going unbeaten this year. Look at N.C. State, they are struggling terrible so far, and they may be our toughest competition the rest of the year looking at our weak conference!

Posted by: Andy Location: Greenville on Sep 15, 2008 at 01:02 PM
ECU is doing a great job, and we have a GREAT coach. Skip is the man. Only bad thing is, if we continue to play well, go to bowls, and possibly undefeated this year, Skip will be gone. A BCS school will scoop him up. Bad thing is there might be a lot of jobs open at the end of this year!!!

Posted by: smb Location: Grimesland on Sep 15, 2008 at 11:13 AM
Well, I was disappointed with the Pirates' performance against Tulane, but I'm happy they pulled off the win and are 3-0! I also hope that Quentin Cotton pulls through and this injury is not the end for him. He played an awesome game! Great job guys! The naysayers can say all they want, but you're still my team!

Posted by: DS Location: Greenville on Sep 15, 2008 at 09:07 AM
The interviews with the ECU players are brutal! Who is helping these guys pass their classes?

Posted by: DK Location: Greenville on Sep 15, 2008 at 08:59 AM
Most people pull for winning teams because they are winning teams. Bandwaggoners is what I call them. I pull for ECU no matter what. When they lose, it just makes me pull for them that much harder.

Posted by: deadfish Location: nc on Sep 15, 2008 at 05:23 AM
Let me correct myself, I was wrong. I stated ECU dropped to #16, #15 according to AP. Let's see what the USA Today and coaches poll reflect. Mr. David: With ALL due respect I know how big ECU and USC are Sir, thank you. For the record I did NOT compare them. If I do I know what the possible results could be. By the same token you are ranked with the big boys therefore accept big boys criticism. It comes with the territory. Ask Billy Weaver and the ECU announcer referring to the #14 team ranked. The problem is that they barely beat an unranked opponent. Also Mr. David ECU is ranked #206 academically, USC is ranked #25. The reason I mentioned that is because I have watched interviews from players of both teams. Suffice to say that the academical differences clearly reflect the players school by their talk. One statement I made was that there were 93K plus at the LA Coliseum last Saturday night without any incidents post game. ECU police and company could NOT handle half that many...

deadfish is my hero!!

Posted by: David Location: Martin Co. on Sep 14, 2008 at 11:35 PM
I have been a Pirate fan for many years. I have watched the winning & losing seasons, but I am still a Pirate fan. The guys played great the 1st 2 games, but last night was not a good game. For those who try to compare USC & ECU that is not a close comparison, USC is 3 times the size of ECU. ECU deserves to be ranked & can continue to be a contender as long as they recruit strong players and keep working with the returning players. ECU continues to play strong opening season games against ranked teams to build a strong team. There are those who doubt what ECU can do and that is your opinion, but you cannot deny that ECU is having a great start to their season & will hopefully continue to play strong. ECU is a great team and deserves to have a good season. For those who want to throw stones at other fans, just make sure you are a true fan of your team & not just a winning season fan or just a single sport team. I support all ECU athletics. Go Pirates, the pride of the fleet. AARRGGHH!

O/084P: We don't hate ECU. Like TROJAN FAN said we are CLASSY fans. Check: http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=3587427 Luckily ECU dropped to #16. You were lucky against VT and Tulane. Let me tell why you are going to lose. It takes a speedy defense like Tulane's and VT's. Opponents we'll be studying those films. Just like last night it happened to OSU 3X. Ohio SU(OSU) was defeated by FL(2006 NC), LSU(2007 NC) and USC. The common denominator is a speedy defense that OSU could NOT handle. Stay tuned and you heard it from deadfish.

This is coming from an Obama supporter!! LOL!!!! Obama and ECU are both losers.

Posted by: Obama 08 4 Prez! on Sep 14, 2008 at 06:22 PM
LOL@all the haters. Leave ECU alone. You talk about the Trojan's like your playing the game yourself. What's the number on your jersey? That's what I thought! ECU still won no matter how they did it, so here is some advice for you.....take a BIG BOY PILL and don't take it with WHINE! <-I hope the play on words doesn't go over your heads.

Posted by: TROJAN FAN Location: TROJAN LAND on Sep 14, 2008 at 05:12 PM
RIGHT ON deadfish!! Trojan fans are CLASSY. ECU fans are riding the bandwagon on a fluke year. Get into a REAL conference ECU!

Posted by: deadfish Location: nc on Sep 14, 2008 at 12:51 PM
Jacob: Your opinion is NOTED, OK? We are all sports fans. WHY can't you take that way? Like it or NOT I'm Trojan fan also. You sound like WVU fans. Your hopes got too big for your britches. I am glad you/ECU took down WVU whose fans are louder than yours. WVU fans are back down to reality were they belong. ECU #14 was short lived. Tomorrow you will smell different roses when ECU will be between 17-21 rating. That is reality again for you Mr. Jacob/ECU fans. BTW Pirates fans there were 93K plus at the LA Coliseum. Guess what? There was NOT a single post game negative incident reported. ECU police and company could NOT handle half that many. Fight On!

To all the posters with nothing but negative comments; this blog is for grownups. There's plenty of other sights meant for children, go post there, the content will be easier for you to understand. Go Pirates!!!

No doubt, Tulane is a good team with a strong defense. I feel we played okay, however penalties are killing us. I think what hurts more is our sorry punting, field goal attempts, and kickoffs. Nick Johnson stepped up, and played a good game for Quentin. Hate he had to end his season like that. O'Line has done a standup job, but yesterday was not one of those times. I am confident Coach Holtz will handle those problems. I realize Va. Tech/WVU are huge wins, but conference games are where we must win. Still proud of the boys, and I hope we kick the snot boogers out of the Wolfpack. For the Trojan fan, go drink a bottle of anti-freeze. We could care less.

Posted by: Jacob Location: G'ville on Sep 14, 2008 at 11:17 AM
To Trojan Fan: Well, you probably fit the profile of someone who has accomplished nothing their entire life, and gets pumped by demeaning the accomplishments of others. Although I graduated from a different university I pull for the Pirates because they represent the area in which I reside and have come to love.

Got lucky on this one but they have VA and NC State coming up so losses are on the horizon. Oh, bet they drop down from 14th also Great observation Dave as u r so correct about them caring about the Pirates instead of the Criminals. Guess some can get 2 much of that so called education and good common sense leaves their mind

Wow is it that hard for some of you loser to give credit where credit is due. Luck or not they still won!

Posted by: deadfish Location: nc on Sep 13, 2008 at 09:40 PM
I can't believe I totally agree with Anonymous, Dave and Reality. Billy Weaver and the ECU announcer won't be bragging about ECU being #14 anymore. USF will be the next #14 as they beat #13 Kansas. BTW as I type this Numero UNO USC 21 OSU 3-2nd. QTR! They are playing like a numero uno!

Posted by: pirate '00 Location: winterville on Sep 13, 2008 at 09:18 PM
The Pirates will be OK. Turnovers kept Tulane in the game. A win is a win regardless of the final score. Just a little reality check. Go Pirates!!!
