Two Bertie County high school teachers have been placed on paid leave as the SBI investigates allegations that a teacher had sex with a student.
Spokeswoman Noelle Talley says the SBI began investigating at the request of Bertie County Sheriff Greg Atkins. She said they are only investigating one teacher.
Superintendent Dr. Chip Zullinger says the school system received the allegations earlier this month that the two men teachers at Bertie High School had inappropriate activity with a female student. Dr. Zullinger says that alleged activity took place approximately three years ago both on and off school grounds. The girl is no longer a student within their school system.
Zullinger said anytime they receive those types of accusations the teacher is place on paid leave while authorities investigate. The superintendent says one of the teachers involved has a flawless record, while the other one has had some minor performance concerns.
The SBI says no one has yet been charged and their investigation is ongoing.
