A cemetery in Vanceboro has been hit by vandals.
Celestial Memorial Gardens Cemetery on Old Washington Road in Vanceboro was the target of vandals who broke pots, vases and signs over the weekend, according to the New Bern Sun Journal. The paper says one headstone was knocked over, and the woman who runs the non-profit cemetery is offering a reward for information that leads to an arrest.

Everything kept as a memorial is of course for those left behind, not the deceased themselves.. as they are gone. While I believe that in many cases people go overboard on expenditures and it's unnecessary, I also don't think that anyone else has a right to interfere with how they choose to intern their loved ones. I have to wonder why anyone has so much time on their hands that they would put energy into this sort of vandalism (or any vandalism for that matter). They could go down the highway and pick up trash if they are feeling so motivated to run around somewhere. It's shameful that such people can't find positive outlets.

My daughter is buried in Oak dale Cemetery in Washington. Her first year,I put an Easter basket filled with plastic jewelry and lots of candies.Someone ripped apart her basket and took all the candy out.It broke my heart even more as I felt she could not be with me,let alone be in her grave and left in peace. It takes sorry, cold hearted people to not think before acting out such crimes against the deceased.
