Inspectors Tell Pitt County Jail To Get Rid Of Inmates
Sheriff Mac Manning says the request would immediately force moving inmates out to other counties and restrict admissions to 404 inmates. But Thursday afternoon the fire rescue chief says that's on hold for now.

A fire inspector this week told the Pitt County Detention Center to reduce its inmate population by 104 inmates, but now that's on hold as there appears to be some dispute over just what is the occupancy level of the jai.

Sheriff Mac Manning said the order would immediately force moving inmates out to other counties and restrict admissions to 404 inmates.

But Thursday afternoon Fire Rescue Chief Mike Burton says there are questions just what the legal occupancy is for the jail. In a news release, Burton says until that is determined, no additional action will be taken by the city.

Burton said they received a telephone complaint last Friday that the jail was operating with too many prisoners. He said since the initial inspection, there has been a series of discussions between city and county officials as they seek the "appropriate resolution".

On Monday the inmate count was 508. The fire department told the jail to make the changes within five days, but now that is on hold.

The jail was built in 1993 and was added on in 1997. Manning says the inspector's order wa ill-timed, considering that the county is set to open up a 192 bed addition within the next three months and has also received state permission to operate the jail with a capacity of 596 inmates.

The law says prisoners are to be allowed TV, but doesn't specify what TV. Sheriff Joe has TV in Arizona. The prisoners get 2 channels, the Inspiration channel and the Disney channel.

We should keep them locked up by whatever means necessary, put up tents or whatever but don't let them loose, that sends the wrong message for those who have done wrong. Sheriff Manning certainly has the right idea, the Pitt County inmates are treated much better than the honorable soldiers that are fighting for our freedom. Sheriff Manning is simply fighting for our freedoms by not allowing criminals out that may rob us, break into our homes or bring harm to us or our families. Thank you Sheriff Manning!

ok, they may not have access to tv or computers, but the mere fact they are sitting on their sorry butts doing nothing while the taxpayers pay for them to be housed and fed makes me sick. it's mind boggling that we have that many inmates in our jail. why can't people obey the law like the rest of us??? if jail and prison were harder on the inmates maybe they'd be less prong to get into trouble. they are lazy and want a free ride out of life. I have more self respect than that! PUT THEM IN TENTS!
