Two correctional officers and a former captain have been charged with assaulting an inmate at Maury Correctional Institution in Greene County.

The State Bureau of Investigation arrested the three Wednesday for the March 2008 assault of inmate David Richardson.

Gregory Beck was a captain and he resigned last year. Sgt. Terry Bell and Officer Brian Bostick were placed on investigatory suspension after their arrest. The three are charged with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury.

The Department of Correction tells WITN News that Richardson was struck with a baton and received treatment at the prison and a local hospital. He has since been moved to another prison.

“I have zero-tolerance for putting public safety or the safety of inmates at risk. Those who abuse inmates or operate outside the law will be held accountable,” Governor Beverly Perdue said in a statement late Wednesday afternoon.

"Our job is protecting the safety of the public and the inmates in our institutions," said Correction Secretary Alvin Keller. "This agency has zero tolerance for employees who abuse inmates or operate outside the bounds of the law and our policies and procedures."

Beck was with the Department of Correction since 1992, while Bell began work in 2003 and Bostick in 2005.

Richardson is serving a 9 year sentence for robbery with a dangerous weapon from Mecklenburg County.

According to D.O.C. records, Richardson's list of infractions while at Maury include two for assault staff with weapon, and one for assault person with weapon, all on March 21st, 2008.

Previous infractions at Maury include assault staff with weapon on December 13,2007; lock tampering on December 13, 2007; disobey order on October 4, 2007; and threaten to harm/injure staff on October 4, 2007.

Some food for thought. What about inamtes spitting in officers faces? I guess you must think they are all disease free in there? Would you want one to spit in your face, or would you give one mouth to mouth? I have seen inmates kissing a 'punk' on the inside or have to 'break apart' inmates, but yet when their 'honies' come to visit- they are kissing in them in the mouth! Most inmates call the unnatural acts 'releasing pressure'. I say if it quacks...Not to mention how they will urinate in a cup and throw it on officers who follow POLICY and don't let them have their way. Better yet the ones whom covers themselves in feces and instigate an action where they know officers will have to put their hands on them. Bleeding hearts wake up- this is not happy ending movies here!

guard take an oath to uphold the constitution and based upon that they should honor their roles. I know that they sleep, and assault inmates because they are clothed in that authority. Do not for one minute think that this is an isolated incident. They beat my good friend beacuse of the color of his skin. They should therefore be punished to the full extent of the law.
