A teenager, who police say fired on an officer Thursday, is out of jail.

Jermaine Roberson was arrested Friday night on charges of assault on a law enforcement officer with a firearm, possession of a handgun by a minor and resisting a public officer.

Jail records show the 16-year-old had a $50,000 secured bond and was released later that night. Roberson is scheduled to make a first court appearance on Monday.

Police say Roberson ran from a SUV that they stopped in front of the Weyerhauser facility on Hanrahan Road early Thursday.

Chief Warren Morrisette says Roberson fired a shot at the police officer. Morrisette says Corporal Kenneth Todd returned fire and hit the suspect in the leg. Police say Roberson continued running and disappeared into the woods.

Todd is on paid leave pending the conclusion of an SBI investigation into the shooting.

Roberson was treated and released from Pitt County Memorial Hospital Thursday, but police said they delayed charging the teen until the SBI investigation into the shooting could be complete.

A 16-year-old has been treated at a hospital after getting shot by a police officer.

A Pitt County Memorial Hospital spokesman says Jermaine Roberson was released from the hospital this morning.

The State Bureau of Investigation is now handling the probe into the Thursday shooting. Grifton police chief Warren Morrisette says Roberson will not be charged until the SBI completes its investigation.

Morrisette tells WITN the shooting happened around 1 a.m. Thursday on the access road to the Weyerhauser facility on Hanrahan Road.

Corporal Kenneth Todd has been suspended with pay pending the outcome of the investigation.

It is standard practice for the SBI to handle investigations of shootings involving law enforcement and for those officers to be placed on paid leave.

Chief Morrisette says Todd pulled over a blue Toyota 4-Runner because it matched the description of a vehicle involved in another shooting that had just occurred on Water St. in Grifton.

Police say Roberson ran from the vehicle and fired a shot at the police officer. Morrisette says Todd returned fire and hit the suspect in the leg. Police say Roberson continued running and disappeared into the woods.

His mother, who spoke with WITN, says she doesn't believe her son did anything wrong.

Chief Morrisette says Roberson went to Pitt County Memorial Hospital on his own for treatment.

There were four other people in the 4-Runner that the teen ran from, police say. They are now being questioned by police.

The shooting also impacted people who work at Weyerhauser.

The overnight shift, which usually has 50 workers, was not allowed to leave the facility when their shift ended at 3:30 a.m.

The 100 workers who were on their way to start their shift in the morning were held at a nearby gas station. Police opened up the access road around 7:30 a.m. so the employees could leave and enter the plant.
