Two students are jailed after authorities say they found a loaded .32 caliber semi-automatic pistol in school Monday. The gun turned out to be stolen.
The two are ninth graders at Ayden-Grifton High School.
Deputies have charged Arthur Goddard with having a weapon on campus, larceny of a firearm, and possession of a stolen firearm. Shondarius Cogdell is charged with having a weapon on campus and possession of a stolen firearm.
The two 16-year-olds remain in the Pitt County jail.
Pitt County Schools spokeswoman Heath Mayo tells WITN News one of the students brought the gun to school and gave it to another. She says later in the day other students approached a school resource officer and told them they had seen the gun. The officer went into the classroom and found the gun in the student's book bag without incident.
Mayo says school staff did not believe the students meant to harm anyone. She says both students will be disciplined based on their school code. The maximum punishment for bringing a weapon on campus is a year's expulsion.

When I was in high school, we actually had a skeet shooting team. We'd show up for school in the mornings with our shotguns in tow, walk across the campus with them, and give them to our instructor to keep for us. After school let out for the day, off we'd all go to the edge of the campus, load up, and merrily proceed to blast those clay pigeons out of the sky. Nowadays, such an action would elicit an immediate school lockdown and the local SWAT team coming in like D-Day. I'm glad I went to school when I did...and oh yeah, our summer vacations from school began in May and ended in September. Ah, memories !

Country... you are onto something there. They do need discipline and to learn respect. Instead of giving checks to the family, the check can go to the school to supply their room and board. It doesn't need to be like a prison, just a home away from home with a better environment.
