National Park Service officials are expanding closures on some Outer Banks beaches after vandalism was found at sites that protect the nests of endangered birds.

Damaged signs, poles and ropes marking closed areas were discovered at Hatteras Inlet and Buxton over the weekend.

Under a court agreement between the park service and
environmentalists, any vandalism results in an expansion of the protected area. That means less beach is open to the public.

Park Service officials said Tuesday the incidents were the second and third acts of vandalism at bird protection sites since the areas were established in March.

Closures keep vehicles and pedestrians away from nests of
endangered birds and sea turtles along the Cape Hatteras National
Seashore.

Taking away more beach access does not fix the problem and only causes more conflict. Catch the law breakers and leave the access as it is. We are experiencing poor judgement and management of areas our tax dollars support. National parks are supported by all tax payers.

It is totally unfair to punish law abiding citizens by taking away more beach access because of a few vandals. Why not catch the vandals and punish them instead. Enforce the existing laws and don't impose new ones on the people who have done nothing wrong in the first place. My family and I still enjoy having access to beaches without tall buildings and commercial developments at the ocean's edge and want to keep it open that way. So catch the criminals and let the people enjoy the recreation areas as they were meant to be used and guaranteed by the US Government when the park service was established in the first place.
