Authorities in Bertie County are investigating two home invasions on Sunday that left one man dead and another wounded.

Both shootings happened in the same neighborhood in Colerain.

Dead is 54-year-old Larry Daniel Harrell from an apparent gunshot wound. Harrell was staying over at Ned Freeman's home, who is the second victim.

Sheriff Greg Atkins says the first call they received involved the shooting of Freeman. They say he was spending the night at his girlfriend's home when 3-4 people burst into her home and shot the man. Freeman is at Pitt County Memorial Hospital.

Several hours later they got a second call that Harrell's body was found next door at Freeman's home.

So far there have been no arrests in either shooting.

Bertie County Sheriff Charles Greg Atkins confirms to WITN that a man's body was found dead in his home Sunday Morning. It happened in the town of Colerain.

Atkins would not say how the man died but did say they are investigating the death as a homicide.

The man's home was broken into and Atkins says as many as four people may be involved in the home invasion.

Just hours before that there was another home invasion.

Atkins says his department got that call about 5am Sunday morning in the same neighborhood.

The Sheriff says the victim's home was broken into and he was shot.

The victim was taken to Pitt County Memorial Hospital and his condition is unknown at this time.

Sheriff Atkins says, "if these two home break-ins are not connected it would be a coincidence."

The Sheriff did not release the name of the victims due to next of kin being notified.
