Halifax County lawmen say they got a call from a Roanoke Rapids man who said he had shot someone.

Friday the 13th began on a deadly note in Halifax County. Deputies say they got a call about from a man saying he had shot someone.

Halifax County lawmen say they responded to the call on Huckleberry Bottom Rd. in Roanoke Rapids at 12:34 a.m. Friday to the home of Hawkins Mayo. Deputies detained Mayo, while emergency crews tended to a gunshot victim, Delwin Jones of Roanoke Rapids.

Emergency crews took Jones to Halifax Regional Hospital, but he ended up getting flown to Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville. Lawmen say the 31-year-old was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Back at the crime scene, detectives say they found a gun in a pile of debris at Mayo's home. Lawmen say it is alleged that Mayo and Jones got into a fight, and Mayo shot Jones in the stomach.

The 55-year-old Hawkins is charged with murder and is being held without bond.
