An Alabama sheriff is agreeing to give up future profits from his jail kitchen.

According to a judge, that deal was reached with Sheriff Greg Bartlett, who was jailed after admitting that he legally pocketed about $210,000 from the kitchen while providing skimpy meals to inmates.

According to the judge's order, Bartlett has promised to use all government funding he receives for food to actually feed prisoners in the county lockup, which holds about 300 men and women.

In the past, Bartlett has kept any profits generated from the kitchen. He was allowed to do so, as were other Alabama sheriffs, under a state law dating to the 1920s.

The judge's order says Bartlett has also promised to follow USDA guidelines and provide inmates with meals that include fresh fruit and milk. Those are items that the prisoners say they rarely or never received in the past.
