Sheriff's officials say a woman was shot and killed by her ex-boyfriend after she changed her Facebook status to "engaged."
The Daily News of Jacksonville reported on Tuesday that Onslow County Sheriff's Maj. Donnie Worrell said 63-year-old Karen Ann Rooney was shot twice in the torso in her home. Worrell said 62-year-old Peter Terrance Moonan then killed himself with the same .357-caliber handgun.
Worrell said their bodies were discovered last Saturday by a neighbor who wanted to introduce his wife to Rooney. The neighbor also said Rooney had begun dating another man.
Rooney and Moonan dated for 16 years, and tax records show they bought a home together in 2002 before breaking up last February. Worrell said the couple didn't have a history of domestic violence.

The Onslow County Sheriff's Office has released more information about a homicide-suicide that happened Saturday night in Maysville.
Deputies say that Saturday night around 6:05pm deputies responded to 1689 White Oak River Rd in Maysville in reference to a shooting.
Neighbor Aaron Bynum says he drove over to Karen Rooney's home expecting to introduce his new wife to her, but instead he made a gruesome discovery. He says "I parked in the driveway, walked across the porch like I always do, I just did a courtesy knock and then opened the door and saw something that shouldn't have been there..."
That's when Bynum saw his neighbor's ex-boyfriend, Peter Moonan, laying dead inside the home, and he instantly called 911.
Police say they found 63-year-old Karen Ann Rooney and 62-year-old Peter Terrance Moonan dead in the residence.
An Investigation revealed that Peter Moonan had shot Karen Rooney twice in the upper torso while she laid on a love seat. Peter Moonan then turned the weapon on himself and shot himself in the head.
Investigators say the two had been a couple for the past 16 years, but had split up in February 2010. They say Rooney still resided in the residence and Moonan was staying with family in Carteret County.
A family member of Moonan told investigator's that Mr. Moonan had been depressed lately, but had not displayed any signs that they felt he could have been a danger to anyone.
The Sheriff's Office has no record of any past domestic problems between the two. Autopsies were scheduled.

To Kim: You have a right to your opinion about this article, just like any of the rest of us. The article clearly states the timeline of this unfortunate incident coincidently occurred after the woman changed her Facebook status to 'engaged'. We are not insensitive to the deaths, just responding to the article. Facebook is just an online 'club'. If it works for you, fine. This comment section is also a type of 'club', but without the pics and personal detailing of the commenters.
This headline has sparked nothing but comments about facebook. The story is about a murder/suicide. I am disappointed how indelicate this has become. Prayers to the family for their loss.
I hear of more negative things happening with facebook than positive. If it works for someone - fine, but I don't use it.
