WILSON N.C. -- The Wilson Tobs defeated the Outer Banks Daredevils by a score of 12-8 Thursday night in front of a crowd of 1109 at Fleming Stadium. The Tobs had three big run producing innings scoring two runs in the first, six runs in the fourth and four runs in the seventh. The Tobs at one point had an 8-3 lead, Outer Banks tied it at 8, but the Tobs prevailed 12-8.
In the first inning Tobs starter Brice Rivenbark gave up three runs. He didn’t have much help from his defense early as they committed two errors in the first. The Tobs got back two runs though in the bottom of the first off Outer Banks starter Brandon Smith. The Daredevils committed one error themselves in the inning. The score after one full inning was 3-2 Daredevils.
In the bottom of the forth inning the Tobs offense struck again. Wilson put up six runs on six hits in the inning. That offense output knocked Smith from the game. The big blow in the inning was a two- run double by Jeff Bouton followed by a RBI single by the Tobs number nine hitter Angelo LaBruna. The Score after four complete innings was 8-3 Wilson.
The Daredevils didn’t have any fear and put up three runs in the top half of the fifth inning to shred the Tobs lead to 8-6. That assault sent Rivenbark to the showers early. In the top of the sixth, off Wilson reliever Tyler King, the Daredevils led off with a triple followed by a double. After the clean up hitter Jordan Hankins grounded out, Chad Carmen tied the game back up at 8 a piece with an RBI single.
The game stayed tied until the bottom of the seventh, when the Wilson bats came alive again. The main damage was done by Bouton. With runners on first and second base, he laced another double down the right field line. Both runners came into score, this put the Tobs up by a score of 10-8. LaBruna, not to be outdone, lined the first pitch he saw over the left fielder’s head and the ball clanked up against the wall scoring Bouton easily from second base. LaBruna stood at second and eventually scored later in the inning to increase the Tobs lead to 12-8.
Wilson played great defense in the eighth and ninth innings to help preserve the lead. Chad Girodo pitched two innings of one hit scoreless baseball; to pick up his second win of the season and improving his record to (2-0). Joe Spring of the Daredevils picked up the loss, which evens his record out at (1-1). Jon Levin pitched a perfect ninth inning in a non-save situation but put down the Daredevils in order. The Tobs now climb closer to .500 and improve their overall record to 22-23. Outer Banks falls to 18-25 overall. With all of the action in the game, it was still played at a steady pace. The game lasted two hours and thirty-six minutes, and the temperature at first pitch was 96 degrees. The Wilson Tobs beat the heat (and the Outer Banks Daredevils) picking up the win 12-8.
The Wilson Tobs will finish the home and home series with the Daredevils on Friday as they travel to Kill Devil Hills for the final time this summer. The pitching match-up is scheduled to be Chase Bebout (1-6, 4.34) for the Tobs vs. Zach Smith (1-3, 5.60) for the Daredevils.
