SHERIFF'S OFFICE: Threat Against Camo-Wearing High School Students

A teenager faces several charges after lawmen say he was assaulted and then threatened violence at school.

Authorities say the Wayne County Deputy Darryl Powe, the resource officer at Charles B. Aycock High School, received information Thursday that a student had made a threat against other students.

The deputy and school officials attempted to speak to 16-year-old Devon Elder, but they say he became hostile, acted violent and then ran off. Powe followed and took Elder into custody.

Authorities report their investigation revealed that two or three people wearing camoflauge assaulted Elder Tuesday night off campus, in Pikeville. They say after Elder then made the threat "he was going to the school and was going to shoot everyone wearing camouflage on Friday." The alleged threat was posted by other students on their Facebook pages.

The Sheriff's Office reports even though Elder was still locked up, additional deputies were put on duty at the school Friday. They report at no time was the school under lockdown or weapons found at the school.

"In today's world, the school nor law enforcement can afford to not take any threat seriously," said Sheriff Carey Winders. "The Sheriff's Office Support Services Division which includes our School Resource Officers immediately initiated an investigation into this situation. I appreciate their initiative to get to the bottom of this and to take the precautions that they did to ensure everyone's safety."

Elder's is charged with communicating threats, as well as resisting, obstructing and delaying a law enforcement officer and disorderly conduct.

i am glad the cops took this serious.. look how many schools that have had shootings that could of been avoided if the threats are taken seriously..and the boys that assaulted this kid was wrong and this kid was wrong for threating all the others because he was done wrong im tired of paying taxes so its ok to say im going go shoot everyone that has jobs that involve taxes?? its time for the schools and parents to take control again and raise our kids instead of the government telling us how to.. i got my butt spanked and im aint no theft killer rapist.. stop making excuses for the kids actions and make them man up to their faults.. i can see our arm forces in 10 years having to depend on this next generation im afraid they being killing each other because their feelings where hurt or they were looked at wrong

The young man is still a minor at the age of 16. He can be charged and tried as an adult, but it all depends on the severity of the crime. Educate yourselves people.

Racism is not out of control at CBA... You people have no idea what you are talking about. You don't know the school or the students that go there... And until you personally attend or teach there then you have no right to judge it. The administration did exactly what they should have, you guys are fussing about the rights of ONE kid... What about the safety of the other 1200... People please... Think realistically!

As a teacher from fall 2008 until spring 2010 I can personally testify to the fact that there is rampant racism directed towards Caucasian students, Africa American students, as well as Hispanic students

I just want to point out that I felt completely safe at Charles B. Aycock today. We have a wonderful faculty that stayed by the students throughout the WHOLE school day - especially during 3rd period, which is when the lunches are. There was at least one law enforcement officer on each hall and the teachers took extra precautions to look out for all of us; it even got to a point that they recommended that we limit our bathroom trips and random hallway trips. Our main police officers were very kind and welcoming to all of us today, but they're always like that. I even saw one of our main cops (a black guy, might I point out) standing by the trucks in the student parking lot this morning, which is where the boys that wear camo tend to park. I have never once (not even this week) not felt safe at school. As for the camo rebels today, it's whatever. Some wore it just to make it a point. To be frank, I thought it was stupid - that's just edging it on - but I don't care.. I don't wear that stuff. Oh, and as for the boys that pushed him over the edge, nothing was reported. Rumors have it at school that the Tuesday incident happened outside of school, so our school officials don't have a right to suspend the other students. The boy should have seeked help when it happened rather than "defend himself" and threaten to shoot a good eighth of our school. As for the interracial comments on Facebook, I personally don't see how it is related to this problem. Does anybody have proof of this? I will be the first to admit it: our school has been a bit wack lately, but it is still ultimately a safe and good place to be. Ohhh.. and teachers told Dr. Moore about the threat yesterday. He didn't find out through Facebook. I was right in front of a teacher who called him specifically yesterday. What I'm trying to say is, obviously the police report won't have all of the detials.. but at the same time, you have to remember not to assume anything either.

An investigation should be opened into who assaulted him and why. There may be more than one suspect to this story. It should be looked into just to determine this young man's mental status.

Jc, you really think you could put god into some of these children when you can't even get them to shut up and pay attention long enough to teach them how to read. We need to put the paddle back into the schools, them we could teach them how to spell "God".
