An inmate is now charged with murder after another inmate he fought with died.
Christopher Phillips is accused of assaulting Terry Houser on June 30 at Neuse Correctional in Goldsboro. Goldsboro Police say Houser passed away at Wayne Memorial Hospital on Wednesday from his injuries.
On Thursday, police say they upgraded charges against Phillips from assault inflicting serious bodily injury to murder. The 28 year old is being held on no bond.
Phillips' first court appearance is set for Monday.
A state prison inmate has died, three weeks after an apparent assault with another inmate.
The Department of Public Safety says Terry Houser passed away Wednesday morning at Wayne Memorial Hospital. Court documents say Houser had a "fractured spleen".
Spokeswoman Pam Walker says back on June 30th Houser was assaulted at Neuse Correctional Institution in Goldsboro.
After the fight, police charged Christopher Phillips of Wilson County with assault inflicting serious bodily injury. They now say he's going to be charged with murder.
Phillips was in prison for felony breaking an entering and was released a couple of days after the assault when his time was up. He's now in the Wayne County jail and police say they expect murder charges to be filed Thursday.
Major Alton King with Goldsboro police explained they were notified of the prison assault on July 7th. He said the victim was taken to Wayne Memorial with some internal injuries and prison officials did their investigation before notifying them.
King said they had to get the help of probation officers to locate Phillips after his release from prison.
He's now under a substantial bond at the county jail.
