People Lining Up For Free Food In Wilson

People are lined up outside a free food distribution event in Wilson right now.

The Opportunities Industrialization Center of Wilson, Inc. is running the Quarterly Emergency Food Distribution at the organization's headquarters at 801 Reid St. in Wilson.

WITN's Brittany Gunter is there and says the line stretches for blocks.

The distribution started at 8 a.m. and will continue until all the food has been given away. Wilson County residents who are unemployed, underemployed, low income or receiving public assistance are welcome.

Free health screenings will be available during the distribution event as well.

It is GREAT that people are helping their neighbors in need. I myself Struggle. There is only my husband and myself. My husband has had serious medical issues over the last year and just had surgery last month. I have always worked and we have struggled. Yesterday I went to a place to see if we could get a little help with a few groceries. When I pulled in the parking lot I did not know what direction to go. An elderly woman who works for this place, was walking across the parking lot and asked what I was looking for. When I told her she got a look on her face and said that I should have signed up before now and that there was no way they could help us. I get it, but I do not get the attitude she had in her tone. We will manage as we always do. And I know there are people out there that did get the help they needed. I hate asking anyone for anything. My dad always told me never to depend on anyone else, and we have to take care of our own. But just sometimes we need a little help.

If you learn anything in this world..it should be to never turn your back on the poor. If you look in that line...there were all races. If you have to work like I do for a living...count it a blessing. Some people do not like being on welfare. There are military people getting food stamps. These are the ones fighting for our country and they can't even afford to live without EBT. Please do not turn your nose up at people. God created all of us. My parents always said...If you are too high, God will bring you down.

There are many people who really are suffering and need some help, but most of those people are falling through the cracks. It's the people who are abusing the system and those who keep having children they can't feed who are placing a burden on society. I'm quite sure that there may have been a few standing in this line that really needed assistance, but I bet we'd be amazed at the number of people in that line who will not help themselves and have mastered the art of gaming the system. I'd be willing to bet that most of the ones lined up are already getting foodstamps and other types of assistance too. I don't think anyone looks down on people who really need help, but I think most most of us would like to see people take more personal responsibility in their own lives and in the decisions they make. Why do people keep having more children when they already have 6 on government assistance? That's a decision they make that impacts all of us. Obviously, the system we have is not working. It is actually working against us because it's encouraging more of the same. The government benefits are paying off big time. It makes it much easier than having to get up and go to work everyday. Obviously, most people do like being on welfare or we wouldn't have over half of our population on it! There's no shame in their game! We are turning our backs on the poor because of the large number of people being allowed to take advantage of the system. I've heard of people buying $800 worth of food on foodstamps, then swinging by a local church to wipe out the food pantry on their way home. That's just wrong. It's greed...plain and simple. These people are taking benefits intended for the poor. We have an entitlement mentality in this country and it's bankrupting us. What makes it even worse is that many people can't get help because we don't have enough resources to help those who don't need it and those who do.

I would like to go in the grocery store just one time and see someone other than myself actually paying for food. The number of people I see using foodstamp cards is simply unbelievable. These same people get free housing, free medical care and free education. I'm always hearing if someone is already receiving public assistance, they automatically qualify for anything else that's being given for free. It's not fair. They should be cut off from the community handouts such as this one. They are getting assistance already and other people could use a little help every now and then. The amount of food I see people buying with foodstamps is ridiculous. I'm paying for people to eat better than I do! These food drives in our local communities should focus on people who are not receiving assistance... people trying to help themselves. These people could use a hand up once in awhile, not a handout. We will eventually run out of producers to support the takers. We need to start helping the needy, not the greedy.

OIC is a wonderful business in Wilson that not only gives away food on Thanksgiving but several times during the year. They also offer job training, GED courses, scholarships to high school students, health screenings and a vast array of other resources. Mr. Howard Jones(CEO)cares about the people that he serves. His motto is "people helping people". If he doesn't have a problem with giving the food away, why should all of you that are complaining. Take time to research where the food comes from and you all will find he is not using your tax dollars. The food is donated by companies that care about people. Volunteers help distribute the food, feel free to contact OIC of Wilson to volunteer for the next give away. Some of you may actually learn a little compassion while there serving humanity.

It is a shame how some of you people get up here and talk non-sense. I am so tired of people blaming Obama for the mess that the former presidents created. I think the OIC is doing a great deed by giving food out to the less fortunate citizens in their community. I wish some people up here had a heart and stop being a SCROOGE!!!

people that are self employed who really work for a living and who have never had a hand out are hurting now due to slow economic times. how come we do not qualify for free food? I guess we need to stop working, stay home and draw a check so we will have time to go stand in line for free food.

What check? We've got no unemployment benie's, those are for our employees. If you own any kind of a company with any assets that disqualfies us for anything. Have to get rid of all that equipment and live off that til it's gone and the business is gone first. Then you can get a check maybe.

It would be interesting to see how long the line would be if they were giving out jobs! I bet they wouldn't have a big turnout.

Yes it is that time of the year that we who have must feel guilty for all those poor, unfortunates that do not have. Quite a few in that line are on hard times, ie loss of job, etc, but best believe that the majority are "lifers" on the system. Most are on Food Stamps already and they receive plenty to buy groceries, family of 2-$367; 3-$576; 4-$668, etc yet they want that extra box and bag of "free food". Most shop at Harris Teeter to buy the best meat, not Wal-Mart. Its not their money so why conserve it? Most has never worked a day in their life and does not know what is like to have to conserve. Next comes begging for toys for their poor children that have no daddy to buy them toys, food is free, toys are free, clothes are free, housing, medical, transportation, etc. See why those who realy earned and needs help cannot get it?

We are a family of five--I am very frugal/clip coupons/etc--I don't spend as much on food a month as alloted (EBT) as they allow a family of 4--These people would not spend so freely if they actually had to earn the money to pay for the food-I hate getting behind an ebt user in the grocery store line I have my hand full of coupons and money and one cart-they have 2 carts overflowing and a nice ole flag card-Sad thing is most of these people think they are entitled to these handouts--They have been taught to live this way and they are teaching their children to do the same.

It especially warms by heart when I see them swiping their card for 3 cartloads of food, then pull out cash for 2 cases of beer, 2 cartons of cigarettes and $80 worth of lottery tickets. I guess that's the definition of being poor these days!

I have a thought for everyone that is complaining, since it seems popular to quote scripture and bible stories here. Was Jesus talking about death's-door starvation, or hunger? It said "hungry" in my copy the last time I checked. For a group of people that try to present themselves as God-fearing and conscientious so much of the time, ya'll are pretty ugly right now. Whatever you did not do for the least of these... sound familiar?

But Audra, it also says in the Bible, 2 Thessalonains Chapter 3 verse 10 "For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat." Does that sound familiar?

I don't need to sit here and throw scriptures back and forth, and I'm more than qualified to do that if I chose to. You're looking for an excuse to be stingy and angry. You can't justify that. You're assuming that you know the circumstances of everyone standing in that line. I'm not convinced there are enough jobs to go around, are you? Or do you watch the news?

You can pull anything out of the bible you want to prove any point your trying to make OR justify. Christans have been doing it for many, many, many years now.

Well I choose to. I love how people "throw scriptures" out and then have a tantrum when someone else finds a scripture that is directly against what they say. Get a backbone and learn to speak for your self and leave the Bible out of it. But hey, I'm willing and qualified to go toe to toe with you on the Bible.

The Voice in California has implied that jobs are everywhere in California. Obama is giving out money taken from the rich (Except from his rich donors like the CEO of GE), to the poor and Obama has promised to make shovel ready jobs (like the pipeline from Cananda into the United States..Oops he trying to block that one, I forgot.) If you want to help people , hey that is fine but quit using the Bible to verbally beat people up. I'm been educated in the Bible enough to go round for round with you.

Anon, wow you really did miss the point. I don't need to go toe to toe over anything. Have a good time though. Re "The Voice" in California? Is that where "The Voice" is posting from? Or is he just trying to act like he knows what goes on in the job market here. I have a very good friend that relocated to another state after 2 yrs of not being able to replace the job she lost. No.. jobs are not everywhere here. That's as big a crock as someone telling you that it's always sunny and 72 degrees here. If you believe all that, I have a bridge to sell you too.

Well, you can always use Bible verses to make your point and put your own spin on it. I don't think God would approve of people taking from the poor either. I know God doesn't approve of greed and that's alot of what's going on today.
