A drowning in the east claimed the life of a teen this weekend. It's one of several reported drownings since the start of the summer, so we asked a lifeguard about how to stay safe even if you're not an avid swimmer.

Three weeks ago a 14-year-old died in a neighborhood pool in Greenville. Monday authorities discovered the body of another 14-year-old from Raleigh who was swimming at Busco Beach in Goldsboro this weekend.

"Treading water is the key thing to learn how to do so you don't have to have a float. It's just you holding yourself up or just learning how to float on your back or on your stomach," said lifeguard Taylor Gassett

The CDC says about 1 in 5 people who die from drowning are children 14 and younger.
