A new sheriff has been appointed for Wayne County.
County commissioners named Larry Pierce, after he was nominated by the Wayne County Republican Party on Monday.
Pierce will replace Sheriff Carey Winders who died of a heart attack on January 24th.
Pierce has been a sworn law enforcement officer since 1982. He has worked for Goldsboro police, the Wayne County Sheriff's Office and the State Bureau of Investigation, where his specialty was arson investigations.
He left the SBI to work in his family business, Nahunta Pork Center. During that time Pierce was also a special deputy for Wayne County, assisting them with arson cases.
The 55-year-old Pierce is expected to be sworn in next Friday.
