Former Deputy Arrested By SBI For Obstructing Justice, Theft Of Evidence

A former Wayne County deputy sheriff has been arrested by the State Bureau of Investigation.

Randy Thompson has been charged with four counts of obstructing justice and four counts of stealing, altering and destroying evidence.

Thompson surrendered to SBI agents at the magistrate's office and was given a $5,000 unsecured bond. The SBI says the offenses happened when Thompson was a deputy, but released no other details of the case.

County records show Thompson began as a deputy in July 2003 and left July 2, 2012.

Sheriff Carey Winders says in June 2012 they began an internal investigation against Thompson, but when the deputy resigned that investigation ended.

The sheriff says a month later another situation was brought to their attention by a citizen and since it could be considered a criminal matter, they asked the SBI to investigate.

The Sheriff's Office won't disclose information on the nature of either investigation.

Thompson has his first court appearance Monday in Goldsboro.
