Explosion In Haitian Population In Mt. Olive

The town of Mt. Olive says it has seen a dramatic increase in the number of Haitians living in its community since 2010.

Mt. Olive's town manager Charles Brown says towards the end of 2010, Haitians began arriving in town from Florida looking for work. He says most took jobs at the meat processing and packing plants in the area, although he says some newcomers have also opened their own businesses.

Brown says the Haitian population began increasing after the 2010 census was taken, which estimated Mt. Olive's population at 4, 600. Brown says since then, unofficial reports from the Haitian community indicate as many has 3,000 Haitians live in Mt. Olive.

Brown says the increased population has brought more business to existing stores in the area. He says it's beyond the town's scope to do an official population count and with the next census not until 2020, the town will most likely check with schools and employers to try to get a more accurate population estimate.

Mu husband works at Butterball and I wouldn't say it was a dirty job. Take it from somebody who hears there husband complain about them all the time. He says they are completely rude and only talk amongst themselves. I'm not racist..its not about them being a different color. It's about them taking jobs from some people who have been here all of their lives. 3000 have moved to Mt. Olive? Are you serious? Is it necessary to travel in packs like that? This is going to drive people out of Mt. Olive...lets be honest.

Most of these comments are purely racist...Open your eyes people, and move on by helping not by hating others that are less fortunate than us americans. And to whomever made the comment about Haiti being "dirty",well these haitians are doing your "dirty jobs"at Butterball or Smithfield plants.

What does this headline hope to accomplish? Incite anger that everyone isn't Anglo-Saxon? We all know refugees are welcomed with open arms into ENC, from Hurricane Katrina to those drifting at sea from Puerto Rico & Brazil, by white American organizations. What did they think would happen, in the end? This has been going on for decades.

The end result will be more on welfare, food stamps, free medical care and overloaded school conditions.

If they are illegal, its up to the town to kick them out. If nothing is happening get rid of the Police Chief. Fire him and find a Police Officer who will. Stop crying and get the elected people working. They are getting paid to work for us.

...and blacks have crips/bloods, whites have aryian nation etc etc. Open your eyes and stop believing ENC is isolated because the problems you speak of are already here. Take a little trip to Greenville and get some knowledge dropped on you brahh

Well since they have migrated up from the state of Fl, how many of them are legal? even if many of them are not they just claim OTM or OTH so then our government has to hold them until they figure out were they are from. Mean while they have plenty of children born on US soil making them anchor baby's.

Conditions created by those that live there. It's not like "WE THE PEOPLE" are responsible for the poor living conditions. If you don't recall, after the earthquake, billions were sent in (along with hundreds of volenteers) to help get them back to their previous living standards (ha, what a joke) and they've squandered and wasted most of that support. I've been to Haiti...it's a smelly, dirty dump! They made it that way. Now, they're setting out to make OUR country just like Haiti. Isn't that wonderful?

Sadly, many who migrated up this way from the Hurricane Katrina disaster are just as bad. In fact, that is when crime spiraled out of control in this area.
