A man found himself in jail after deputies say he stole from a salvage yard and then sold the stuff back to them.
Michael Butts of Dudley is charged with two counts of larceny, possession of stolen goods and obtaining property by false pretenses.
Wayne County deputies say last Friday they received a report of a theft from NC Salvage on Highway 117. The owner suspected the thefts were happening for a while, so a detective took pictures of the property at the business. Sure enough, a few days later some of the property was stolen and then deputies say Butts came back and sold it to the salvage yard.
Deputies say Butts was getting access to the property via adjacent railroad tracks and believe he had been doing this for a few weeks.
The property was recovered and returned to the company while Butts was jailed on a $5,000 bond.
